distance & also award traditional degrees
#1
Hi,

I am researching researching researching. I am very excited about all this but have not come up with my plan yet. My next step is to price all the cLEP sites near me, as there was a $50 difference per total cost of the CLEP test in the first two places I looked.

However, I saw a comment somewhere about how if you get your degree from a school that also gives degrees in person, those looking at your resume will not be able to distinguish.

Although I disagree with the stigma (and in general, the stigma that exists against on-the-job learning) this was something to think about, since I AM caving in and going for that piece of paper for the sake of my post-retirement income.

So, does anyone know where I could find a list of schools that accept CLEPS and transfer credits, maybe even are affiliated with a portfolio assessment service offer distance classes and also award traditional degrees?

According to the United States Department of Education web site, 98% of public colleges/universities offer distance learning. (not to assume that every degree can be completed that way).

Even in my local po-dunk town, there are at least 100 degrees I could complete at a distance- I'm not exaggerating. So, you can start local.

So, if you are thinking about a bachelor's degree, start at your community college. Why? I'm glad you asked. Confusedmilelol: Because your state has already set up in place "articulation agreements" between your community college and 4 year schools. There are possibly several. The advantage of a CC degree, is that by completing the associate degree, the 4 year college will accept that credit as a block- sometimes meeting all of the general education requirements, and you start as a junior.

The leg work next will be big, but hopefully will pay off for you. You need to look up all the articulations in your community. In my community, there are 2 CCs and a total of 18 colleges they articulate with, well over 100 degrees. *easy to find, let me know if you need guidance.

Next, determine the CLEP policy at your local CC. You DON'T HAVE TO look at the university's policy because if you do an articulation agreement, the CC's policy trumps the university. It's a beautiful thing. Likely, the local CCs will accept anywhere from 0-30 CLEP credits, expect about 15 as an average.

So- in this case, you'd earn all the CLEP credits possible, and then take online classes from your local CC. You would then articulate in as a junior to one of your state universities (which may or may not be an online program) and go from there.

THAT's the way to get a local degree for maximum online/CLEP/transfer. That cuts a ton of money and a bit of time. It also allows you to use distance learning and getting a local degree. It does not maximize CLEP fully, or also the amount of time you could save by being less selective about where you earn your degree. This method is NOT the fastest, NOT the cheapest, and not the most popular. It will, however, take what's available locally and extract the maximum cost savings and CLEP useage. For what it's worth, this is the path I'm using with for my children.

The big 3 do not cap CLEP/DSST credit. EVERYONE else in the USA does.

Well, I am thinking I will just go back to my original plan and take the CLEPS. I was thinking of Excelsior to begin with but I heard that TA is better at helping you get your portfolio assessed. So not sure what to do about that. I am okay with giving up on caring too much about where I get my degree. I do want regional accreditation, but that's it.

However, I have trouble letting go of the idea of getting my portfolio assessed.

Thanks again. This site is just too much.

It is probably going to be easier just taking exams/classes rather then have your portfolio assessed. Portfolios are very time consuming.

And let's not forget EXPENSIVE!! It's $160 per credit for an assessment!?!? What the bleep? What if they deny the credit? No refund. Ouch.

Thats true. What if they do not award you credit for all of the work you have done. Testing is probably easier and faster.
