How you want to get these is up to you.  But there's a map for the UMPI GEC courses via Sophia already out there, if you're doing OnlineDegree courses now, they are NCCRS so UMPI won't take them.

I'm not arguing that it's not stupid. But it's also not worth forging something when you can spend just $36 x 4 ($144) to take the exam(s) at home, potentially get college credit in the process, AND get peace of mind.

Through whom can someone get a GED via exams at home ? Most outlets would make you take an exam, then classes, then the final exam in order to "earn" the GED.

You don't need to take classes to take the GED exam. You just need to sign up for it. You are, however, strongly encouraged to take GED classes. Personally, I took it cold. It wasn't that hard.

Good info. I went to the link and found the info for my state. I know a young lady that began taking classes toward getting her GED. I think the program was going to cost $1,700 or something. She began working at it, and stopped due to $$ issues. Turns out, she didn't need to take the classes at all. For NC, it says she can take the " pre-test" to see if she's ready and then take the test online. So, does she need a certain computer for that with a camera ? I could let her borrow mine if so.....Thanks for this info, she will be very happy.

What a rip-off! There are a lot of FREE GED prep programs out there, too. It's not specifically for GED, but if she feels she needs to brush up in certain areas then she should take a look at https://www.khanacademy.org/ and/or take some Sophia classes. Much cheaper than $1700!

Should need the same kind of computer as for Study.com and similar. https://ged.com/take-the-ged-test-online/ links to a system test you can use to determine whether your computer meets requirements. There are also links for practicing with the allowed online calculator and online whiteboard.

I signed up for Sophia again.  Right now I am taking Intro to Business (I'm really liking it so far, which is a total surprise) and Conflict Resolution (which is just okay).  I'll probably be done with those pretty quickly.

It's been a minute, so I thought I'd update y'all.

I paid for a month of Sophia, and I really busted it to take as many classes as I could.  I still have two weeks left and I am running out of classes to take.  I need to take English Composition but I am procrastinating.  I'm also freaking because I took Intro to Statistics and got a 69.  I sucked so bad at Intro to College Math, too.  Everything else has been good, though.  I was really surprised at how well I did in the business classes.

Anyway, here's what I have done from March 2020 until now...(minus the aforementioned stuff I failed):

For the stuff you failed, I think you can contact Sophia and they will reset it for you ONCE. If you take stats again, make sure you watch the videos. I'm pretty good with math, but even I came close to failure until I realized that I needed to watch the videos. Also, take advantage of the FREE tutoring that's available for the math courses. Algebra and Stats include about 8 hours of tutoring. (They say 10 in https://www.sophia.org/content/dam/sophi...-guide.pdf but the way they account for it means you get 8-9 hours.)

Don't take English Comp at Sophia! There are easier places to take it. If you want a quick couple of credits for Pierpont, take College Readiness and FOUNDATIONS of English Comp. These won't work anywhere else, but they're pretty quick and easy courses that may help you with English Comp elsewhere, later on, so it won't be wasted time/effort. You're also missing Business Law, the personal finance course (plan for your future or whatever it's called), and Communication at Work. Those also have pretty easy Touchstones that you can speed through.

Also, if you want to knock out English Comp 1&2 after Pierpont, ONU’s Your Way courses are free to start, self-paced, deadline of 1 year, and only cost $150 once you are done with the course.

You can move at your own pace without having to worry about subscription time limits or terrible graders. I hear the professors in that program are pretty awesome, as well.

I know money can be tight, but that would be a good way of knocking them out without having to pay up front. As you’re working through the course you can be saving for the $150 AND it’s RA. Can’t beat that with a stick!

I really appreciate all of the support from everyone here.  It has definitely made a difference.

I am probably going to start Foundations of English Comp this weekend.  Writing is one of my strengths, but it's been a long time since I've been in an English class, so I figure it's a good refresher.

I'm also going to contact Sophia re: statistics.  I know I tanked, but if I can re-take one of the milestones again, it just might make the difference to give me a 70 instead of a 69.  I realized that I understood more of the concepts than I thought I would when I originally started, so that's good.

I'm definitely thinking of doing that.  I'm getting some incentives from my employment specialist for doing AmeriCorps, so I will use my next incentives for that.

One thing you could do would be to sign up for ASU's English Comp I: https://ea.asu.edu/courses/english-composition-eng-101/ Not this one, but the one starting in May. Yes, it says it's $425. But it's actually FREE if you audit the course (take it without a grade). It would be more work than ONU's class, but it would also give you the freedom to get reacquainted with academic English without the pressure of having to do well for a grade.
