I am trying to format a UMPI BABA Excel degree plan template using Ashkir's template that I have attached. I am trying to figure out a logical place to account for credit already taken and awarded. Should I just add a column to the spreadsheet for "credit source" and "credits received"?
This potential degree template is for my son who will be 21. He has about 1.5 years of traditional RA credits from Youngstown State University. After a personal tragedy and COVID, he became disillusioned with college and took the past 6 months off. At this point, I think he is interested in getting his degree in the quickest manner possible and the prospect of taking another 3 years to finish off a traditional degree is daunting. He is looking to get either a Bachelor of Business Administration or Finance although the major in Business is less important than getting the Bachelor's degree period. It looks like UMPI would be the cheapest and quickest option.
I have listed the credits below he has already earned. I would appreciate any advice on how to account for these credits utilizing Ashkir's attached spreadsheet as a template.
ANTH 1500 Introduction to Anthropology 3 cr B
REL 2601 Introduction to World Religions 3 cr A
THTR 1500 History of Motion Pictures 3 cr B
ASTR 1504 Descriptive Astronomy 3 cr B
CHMST 1545 Communication Foundations 3 cr B
ENGL 1550 Writing 1 (same as Engl Composition) 3 cr A
PSYCH 1550 General Psychology 3 cr C
YSU 1500 Student Success Seminar 1 cr A
HIST 2605 US History 1 3 cr D
GEOG 2630 Weather 3 cr C
I am guessing the History class would not transfer to UMPI as he received a "D" grade? He would prefer the least amount (ideally none) proctored exams. So, he is looking at taking the ASU intro Biology Lab course which I believe is not proctored?
UMPI does not accept D's. At this time UMPI doesn't have proctors but most courses are papers or projects. ASU has proctors. Sophia is the only ACE provider without proctors.
I would create your own Excel spreadsheet for the courses your son has completed. It might also be easier if he were to join the forum and ask questions.

The vast majority of ASU courses no longer have proctored exams, they appear to be eliminating them over time. BIO 100 does not have any.
When I create a spreadsheet, it's much easier to do it based on what the school requires, and then to start filling in the blanks. It's very specific to the school. Here's what I have at UMPI.
I have the following columns:
1) course # (how the school brings it in)
2) requirement (so if the degree requires Macroecon or College Algebra, I'd put that here)
3) course #/course name (from wherever you took it)
4) source (the school you took the course, or the course provider, or exam)
5) UL
6) credits earned
7) credits needed
8) total
Then for rows, I put the specific sections, with a title if you want
I also have subtotals for GE (knowing that you have to have a minimum of 40cr here, it's helpful); for the major & concentration; and for General Electives. Then I have a total adding up all of the subtotals. So I can see for each section what I've earned, what I need, and the total (i.e. for GE I have 6cr earned, 34cr needed, and a total of 40cr).
Then, you start filling in the blanks. So for your world religion course, you'd put it as covering 5A, with 3cr earned, and your GE would now show 3 / 37 / 40. As you take courses, you fill in the info, and show a course completed, and move 3cr (or whatever) from needed to earned. You'll start to see that earned column increase, which is very motivating. Also, if you move things around, re-check your subtotals and the total, to make sure you didn't accidentally delete something. You should always see that your total credits is 120.

I am assuming the ASU BIO100 meets the Science Lab requirement meets the UMPI GEC lab requirement?
Thanks,

Thanks for the great advice. This is very helpful. Do you (or other members) have UMPI degree plan templates you are willing to share? I am sitting down with my son and then will attempt to create one and will share it here to make sure it is correct.

I started to design a *rough* degree plan Excel template that I have attached based on your columns vs. rows description and I attached it. I still need to fill it out, but, does this look like a good start?
Also, I am really confused by the UMPI area numbering system (i.e. 5A)? Where do I find out what this means?

Honestly I'm not sure if it would meet the requirement, I would assume it does, as ASU considers it a lab science, but it's up to UMPI what they want to transfer it in as.

I attended UMPI and don't have a plan template to share. Mine wouldn't help anyone because I had a lot of RA credits. Everyone should create their own template especially when they have RA credit like your son has. No one can really say how those credits will transfer. We can guess, but often times we're wrong. To date, no one has transferred courses from Youngstown to UMPI according to the transfer database. This is where his Youngstown classes might fit in, but this is only a guess.
5A ANTH 1500 Introduction to Anthropology 3 cr B
5A REL 2601 Introduction to World Religions 3 cr A
2E THTR 1500 History of Motion Pictures 3 cr B
3D ASTR 1504 Descriptive Astronomy 3 cr B
General Elective CHMST 1545 Communication Foundations 3 cr B
1A, 1D - this is a guess - UMPI can be picky about English courses ENGL 1550 Writing 1 (same as Engl Composition) 3 cr A
2B PSYCH 1550 General Psychology 3 cr C
4A - this isn't needed for YourPace students as there is a 0 credit course YourPace students take that shows you how the learning platform works YSU 1500 Student Success Seminar 1 cr A
Won't transfer HIST 2605 US History 1 3 cr D
3D GEOG 2630 Weather 3 cr C

@ss20ts
Thank you especially for the UMPI category equivalent analysis! This is very helpful. I am trying to educate myself and my son as to helping him plan the most efficient degree plan possible in an easy to understand Excel template. This will help frame the discussion he has with UMPI.
Basically... Applications are free, I would apply and get an evaluation on what course credits he has, especially since the application deadline is August 9th. While waiting, take courses from Sophia.org that you know will go into his plan and doesn't duplicate the names of the courses he has already taken. He can take the courses before starting the session, or even delay to the next session, the main goal is "knowing" what goes where....
Essentially... When you have the evaluation, you'll know where you stand and what courses are remaining, it's just 40 courses, if you create a template using the wiki or their requirements, some courses duplicate and can go up to 50+ course requirements. Just like COSC, there are multiple requirements which each course may fit, in the end, you're not double dipping, you still need to take the 40 courses to finish off the degree.
