Unpopular opinion: GEC is Gen Ed and I'm tired of UMPI pretending they're special with their wording. 

Sure, it's a bit different from how TESU or Excelsior do Gen Eds, but it's nearly identical to COSC. GEC are Gen Ed classes and UMPI is being a bit precious with their wording.

GEC isn't an UMPI thing. It's a U of M thing. A lot of colleges have funky names for what amounts to gen eds.

Specifically, I am looking at First Step Korean by Yonsei University. I saw on the UMPI website that non-accredited courses will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. So I am curious if non-accredited Coursera classes have ever been approved before. 

Here's what it says:

"UMPI may accept transfer credits from institutions that are not regionally accredited. Students who have completed courses or training at such institutions should first investigate whether the courses completed are recommended for transfer credit by the American Council on Education. If not, students may initiate the evaluation process by contacting their professional academic advisor. Students will be required to provide a description of the training/course, contact hours, instructor credentials, and a syllabus or training outline as supporting documents. The Provost must approve transfer credit from non-regionally accredited institutions."

I would ask UMPI directly, but I don't have an academic advisor since I am not enrolled yet. Could I ask the registrar?

PS: I am also open to taking an accredited course elsewhere, but I prefer it be affordable and/or at my own pace. Any recommendations for Korean (or Japanese!) courses are welcome!

However, the problem here is a different one. Yonsei University is regionally accredited, but First Step Korean is not a credit bearing course, so there are no credits to transfer.

There are a number of universities that offer self-paced language courses. https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Obscure_Credits

Alternatively, study using any means available and take an ACTFL exam. The OPI has both Japanese and Korean, as does the OPIc and the WPT. The other ACTFL exams do not offer Japanese or Korean as an option for credit.
