What is a straighterline course like? How is it setup? Do I need the recommended text or can I use another 2 or three texts that I have?
How long does one usually take to complete a course?
Thanks
Hi there! I was very pleased with my Straighterline courses and would recommend them again, though contrary to many opinions I've seen here, I did not think that they were easy.
For some courses, you may not need the text, but for the classes that I took (see my signature) many questions on the exams were taken word-for-word from the textbooks. That being said, I bought each text used online for just a few bucks. It's not important to use the very most current book, just get a recent edition to save a few bucks. At least for the ones I took, it was well worth it.
How long you take to master a subject is really up to you. Straighterline only requires that you complete the graded assignments and the number of graded exams varies widely on the course, so you'll need to check the syllabus. Overall, I would say that if you can study for the CLEP or DSST within a week or two, that is probably a quicker or at least easier option. If you're learning a new topic from scratch and want to get a really good grade, it will take longer. If you just want to hurry through the topic like I did with Accounting, you can get through things much quicker.
The format of the classes is pretty cool and varies between online lessons, book reading and assignments and review exercises. It's nice because it allows you to study as much or as little as you need. My DS is taking a couple of SL courses right now. Since he's taking them for both high school and college credit, he'll take months to go through them, but you probably won't need anywhere near that long.
HTH!
