what's wrong with Info. Sys. and Comp. Appl???
#1
Just got back from taking the Info. Sys. and Comp. Appl. CLEP. Failed with a 46. I was shocked to see my score. Felt as prepared as I could have been and even felt confident while I was taking the test. I'm wondering what in the world I could have done differently in order for me to have gotten a passing score???
I worked through (several times) and understood pretty much all of the Instacert flashcards. I read Introduction to Computers & Information Systems by Larry Long. Plus, I took the practice test from the Official CLEP study guide and scored fairly well (then I reviewed my test and understood why I got certain questions wrong, and also went over the ones I got right).
Now I know that people say that you fail tests you feel good about... and you pass tests that you totally think you failed. But why do I feel like CLEP made a mistake? I swear... about 90% of that test I believed that I was understanding the questions they were asking and knew the answer for it. Any thoughts?

If it makes you feel any better, I had a similar experience. I've almost completed my degree via testing and have a good gradepoint....and the Info Systems is the only test I failed. Two days after I took it, I took the DSST Intro to Computers and passed with an A. I don't have any answers for you as to why I failed the CLEP; I was absolutely surprised and dismayed!

Take the DSST intro to computer test like TCC did if you can. There should not be a 180 waiting period in between the two tests since they are considered independent tests. Brush up for two days on IC and you will pass the DSST. Its not timed so you can read slow and careful. The CLEPs can be a little tricky with the clock factor and reading off a computer screen instead of ink/paper.

CaroM,

Oh I see, you think the test system could have marked you paper incorrectly. Of course thats possible and hopefully rare. However, IMO you will be banging your head against the wall trying to get your test rescored or validated. I have never heard of anyone able to do that. Put it behind you and take the DSST. You will be happy when you pass and then laugh at the old 46.

PS if you somehow are able to squeeze out a validation on your score let us know about it.

I took the IS test this week and was shocked as well!!! I was completely comfortable with the InstantCert flashcards. I also reviewed the Pass Your Class studyguide and did the practice test from Collegeboard without a problem. I did pass with a 61, but felt clueless during the test. I would estimate that I guessed on 1/3 of the questions. I had another 45 minutes of time remaining, but it wouldn't have helped. Rereading a question you don't understand over & over is not productive! I'm a little leery about taking more tests at this point. I don't trust study guides to give me an accurate view of the upcoming test. At least your posting makes me feel like it isn't just me who struggled!

Hi AMPawlak227,

Welcome to the board.

Don't underestimate how well you did on this exam. Your score is a scaled score out of a maximum of 80. The average passing score is 50, but you scored a 61. You scored higher than about 86% of people who took the same exam.

There will always be a number of people who fail each exam, for whatever reason. But you weren't even close to failing. Had this exam been a graded exam, you would have got an 'A' on it, with plenty of room to spare.

Hopefully, putting your score in perspective will encourage you.

Also, I am assuming that this was your first exam. As you take more exams, you will develop a study strategy that works for you. You will get used to what type of questions they are likely to ask, and how they might phrase them. You will get a feel for how to pace yourself, both in the actual exam and in your preparation time.

Don't be discouraged okay?

You actually got off to a GREAT start.

Keep it up,
Snazzlefrag
My name is Rob

Thanks for the encouragement! This is actually my second exam. I took the English Comp w/essay exam about three weeks ago, but I have not received a score yet. Although I didn't know all the answers on the English exam, at least I understood all the questions. I couldn't even understand some of the questions on the IS exam which was very disconcerting.

I'm glad I logged into this forum. I was seriously reconsidering taking any further exams. Now I have my book open to decide what should be next on the list. So thanks for the kind words & the info!

I feel your pain I took that exam and got a 44 on it,now for those of you that are reading this I want you to understand that this was the one test that I took where the questions were formatted horribly, alot of the test were questions like a spreadsheet does all except?(a) I (b)II and III ©IV (d)III
I spent alot of the time guessing at those types,I took the Intro to computing and got a 58 so I'll just wait and take this one again.

I took the DSST Intro to Computing test shortly after my Info Sys. fail and I just got my results back today... only had to wait 9 days! My score...61! Wahoo! My advice to everyone is to take the Dantes version over the CLEP. For some reason it's easier.Smile
