Calling all ALEKS Statistics drop outs to this thread for feedback

Spot on. For a concept course like stats, a hunt and peck approach through problem solving will be ultimately be slower than really learning the theory if presented well in a structured and coherent manner. There's really not that much to Intro Stats once you get the 'Big Picture" down. See some of my most recent posts for suggestions of how to do this which include MOOCs, SL Business Stats, and Acrobatiq.

Stop wasting a lot of time searching for the Holy Grail of Shortcuts instead of just enjoying learning by stepping through an easy to understand course that might take a few more hours of time compared to blitzing through flashcards for cram able courses like intros to other Gen-Eds. Stats is just not a cram type course!

Well thank you for the help everyone. I studied all weekend on hypothesis testing, Z scores, Chi-squares, All the different types of distributions. Studied all the formulas and worked through these problems on the pie until I had them mastered.

Taking assessment after assessment is pretty pointless with the ALEKS system. The system knows what I didn't know. When it came to my most recent Final Asessment I scored a 72%. I don't think I'll be attempting Business Stats or the other one if they duplicate at TESC. It may be worth it apparently if I chose Kaplan Univeristy down the road.

I really appreciate all of the tips and links to videos. They really helped with the learning. I agree totally 100% with Johnny Heck. ALEKS is almost impossible to pass if you don't understand the "Big Picture" and the foundation is no there.

If anyone knows of a DSST, TECEP or CLEP for Chemistry or Physics. It would help me immensely to get started. I figured Statistics and Chemistry/Physics would be my biggest challenges. Knocked one out and starting on the other. = )

I learned very quickly that the first two ALEKS assessments are the easiest. If I didn't pass those two, I would switch courses and switch back to start all over.

I don't know what you're degree program is, but usually when TESU requires chemistry or physics, the labs are also required. You won't get lab credits for CLEP, Uexcel, or any other test.

You're definitely right about the assesments. I did the switching. It almost seemed like the software was picking on me. I had 25 questions. 10 of them were hypothesis and the rest were every type of Confidence interval. I might of had 2 or 3 questions from the other sections of the pie.

I don't feel the software gives an accurate "general" knowledge check of statistics. The 72% was earned in all in 1/4 of the pie. All the big picture and high level stuff. I can't complain because I passed.

However, if you have no knowledge of statistics in will take a month or two to complete the course. Studying and working at it everyday or with a good study plan.

This was the most difficult course I've ever taken. Pulling my hair out. Patience and printing formulas and working the pie were the best tips anyone could give me when I was at 62% and ready to give up. I'm very thankful. I would like to continue to learn Statistics because I do see value in checking all the bogus and skewed statistics that we are fed through the media and advertising. It definitely interests me.

I dropped out of ALEKS Intro to Statistics course, it was not working for me. Now considering taking SL Business Statistics. How long did it take you to complete? Difficulty level?

It took me about a week to complete the course, but I was stuck at 60% in Aleks so I had an Ok understanding of what was required, its mostly multiple choice and a few fill in the blanks. Overall I will say its much better than ALEKS.

It took me 3 months to complete the Statistics course. I had very little formal preparation, but I worked diligently on the problems. What helped me was to write down the problems that were wrong and go back to get a full explanation. I ended up with many pages of work but I finished with a 76%.

Congratulations on your fortitude!. But your tale is so sad and unnecessary!. Here you are with all this work proudly accomplished, quite rightly I fully agree. But you will probably be the first to admit that your really don't know much about statistics that you can take forward with you in your career and life. Why is it that so many continue to waste so much time trying to find a short cut to stats knowledge and the credit that will come with it, rather than just taking a good online, free or low cost, self paced course that may take less time, less stress, and will in the end be far more rewarding? For those, including the math phobic, who need stats and want a chance to do it right in 45-90 hours max. shoot me a PM for my tested and/or fully researched recommendations. Good luck to all.

Even if I don't end up knowing much about Stats, I worked for 10 years and never needed ANY of the info for my job (or any other part of my life). So I don't really want to "learn" it as much as I want to spend as little as possible just getting credit for it.
