Excelsior BS in Information Technology
#11
They took my MS Networking Essentials exam (70-58) for the Network core requirements. I was enrolled in the BS-IT in the beginning before switching to the business program. The exam was still accepted when my credits were re-evaluated for the MIS program.

Unfortunately, this exam is retired, I'm not sure if other MS exams can satisfy it. Have you asked directly if there are any cert exams that would satisfy these requirements (Cisco, MS, Sun)?

What made you change to MIS? I am really thinking of just getting my BS in Liberal Arts and getting a Masters in IT. It will most likely be a quicker route to take.

I posted all the information I know, please also note that I get different results in asking for approval via email versus over the phone. Furthermore, the BS in MIS has a lower limit on the maximum number of Certifications then BS IT thus might explain why some folks are getting denies.

Do double check with your advisor.

Mainly the same reason you're considering the change, it was faster and more cost efficient. I was planning to take the GRE Computer Science to fulfill most of the IT requirements but then I missed the boat after learning that me and my wife were going to have a baby, which shifted the focus of all the research and learning energy we had (can't CLEP out of parenting Smile).

You can use the ICCP exams, as zefrench intends to do, not a bad route if you ask me. It's relatively somewhat more expensive and more time consuming in comparison with the MIS program. Plus the business degree had the right mix for me and the type of work I do (which incidently *is* in MIS). I also feel it better prepares me for the next step as I already have a long and varied history of technical experience.

A liberal degree may not be a bad option as long as you know what you're doing next and you're sure that it won't be in the way (i.e. I'd verify with admissions of potential schools that the bachelor degree I'm getting will not be a problem).

I'm still going to have to take a few ICCP exams but not as much as I would have if I had stayed with the original degree program. And I can always take the GRE CS should my next degree require it for admission although the path I am currently considering (an MBA, MS IT or both) should not be a problem.

Please keep in mind that the ICCP exams are not easy. I am taking the require core courses (All 7 of them) at Excelsior. I've taken two courses at the community colleges (Web design and C++). I 'd received credits for both.

I knew I had read about Network+ counting as core requirement somewhere. Many hours later, looking at every single thread, I found the reference. (search function did not like the + at the end of Network+ )

cbrchris says it counted for him here:

Maybe send him a private message to get a copy of his approval email from the advisors which you could send in for approval in your case as well.

I did recieve credit for the Networking requirement for my Network+ exam that I already had prior to enrolling. Here is the email from the advisor when I was originally in the General Business and switched to the MIS degree and I asked about my certs.

Quote:Dear Chris,

The CompTia certification exam Network + does satisfy the Networking requirement. We incorrectly had it satisfying the Database Management requirement. I corrected your Status Report and sent you a new Evaluation Summary. The Microsoft certification and remaining Comp Tia certification exams you completed are all Management of Information Systems electives, and do not satisfy the concentration subjects you listed below. The code of XII symbolizes a Management of Information Systems elective.

Sincerely,
Sandy Perretta

Hello,

On my new status report for MIS it list 3 concentration requirments of:

- A Business Programming Language
- Data Communications or Telecommunications or Networking
- Systems Analysis and Design

I would have assumed that many of the certifications and classes I have completed would have satisfied the requirement of Data Communications or Telecommunications or Networking. On the status report it lists most of the computer classes and certifications with a Core Requirement of: II, except for Network+ as IB. What do those designations mean?

Thanks,
Chris

Network+ is now listed as IC for the code under Core Requirement

Hi all,

Quick intro. I'm a 36 year old father of 2 and work full time. My plan now is to take as many tests for credits as possible since time for classes is very unrealistic at this point.

I learned about CLEP from going to and homeschooling conference. Initially I went to learn stuff for my daughter, but left learning more stuff for myself!

Earlier this year I had an awesome experience with a friend who was able to really pull out my passions and match it up with a degree. It turns out the degree is a master's in Organizational Leadership. (Side question: Does Excelsior offer that? I didn't see it there.) What I have learned so far is that the BA isn't so important as the master's. I've seen advise on taking the shortest and cheapest route to get a BA. Since my current job is in the IT field and I have an MCSE 2003 cert along with a few older exams (70-058, 70-067, & 70-098) I was wondering if getting a BS in IT would be the best for me.

I currently have 18 college credits in:

MAT*106 Math Applications
ENG*101 English Comp. I
ENG*102 English Comp. II
PSY*101 Introduction to Psychology
EDU*100 Introduction to Education
HIS*205 History of U.S.: From 1877

My next step seems to be to to enroll at either Excelsior or TESC. If I enrolled at Excelsior (since it seems to be cheaper in the long run with testing out) could I then transfer my BA to TESC?

Any advise or ideas would be much appreciated!

If there is a nearby CLEP and DSST testing Center, so far it appears the BS in MIS is easier and less costly then BS in IT. The nice thing is to ask at evaluation time to do two evaluation, one with BS in IT, the other with BS in MIS.

Feel free to ask questions with regards to BS in IT in this thread.

zeroglory Wrote:How are the ICCP exams? how do they compare (difficulty wise) to say comptia A+ exam?
How much do they cost?

The ICCP exams are subject exams and require studying, they are not a cram exam for sure. They cost $250 per exam. They compare to a difficult DSST exam as far as I can compare so far. Passing grade is 75%.
