Spring Session 2 Updates
#61
I am done with French. I highly recommend the new French class. It's very well designed, with helpful graphics. It's definitely an elementary and amazing introduction to French. The professor is amazingly responsive. I highly recommend emailing Anabela Ançã Mendes when you're working on the Romance Languages. She's really friendly and very talented. She has a very clear passion for these languages and a very clear passion for teaching it to people. She even has powerpoints, etc, about every topic if you're struggling on any. 100% recommend Anabela Ançã Mendes's classes.

Definitely take French or Spanish at UMPI over others if you can. It was a refreshing course and really easy to learn. The professor worked very hard on this design, and she is great!

This Bio course does seem tedious but I guess its what UMPI feels it required for students. I guess I'll have to drive somewhere for the walk lolz, we can't walk around here on the streets.

The virtual lab was the easiest part of Bio 105 to be honest. But, honestly, the assignments are extraordinarily long. For example, the virtual lab was paired with a 45-minute "nature walk" where you have to take photos of 10 different species, including one animal. Then you have to "find" what species they are. but, you're not supposed to use fields or parks, etc, and need to find a natural environment. Luckily I have some wetlands close by so I went there at night took some photos (Muscovy ducks, swans, mallard ducks, and a bunch of grass species, rosemary, etc).

Don't get me wrong. The Bio professor is really nice and she very clearly knows what she is doing But, the lesson material is confusing. The milestones are the longest of the UMPI program. Seriously, the biome milestone was longer then all of the French milestones, final, and human resources milestone combined. The Bio 105 could probably easily be split into multiple classes such as Introduction to Science, Environmental Studies (Biomes), Evolution & Genetics, Human Anatomy, and Biophysics.

Seriously. 5 entire branches of biology are shoved into this single biology class. Most colleges I've seen split these up, where Human Anatomy is its own class, Biophysics is it's own, Environmental Studies its own, etc.

Honestly, I'm surprised that Maine does teach evolution (Yay! good for them) when Maine is a pretty conservative state.

Every. Single. Milestone. Everyone for BIO 105 has been returned. Every single one. It's always been returned because they want "something else" not listed on the freaken milestone.

Bio 105 ugh.

Oh no! I'm so sorry. Is BIO 105 now your last class at UMPI?

Yes. It also has taken the longest of any of them. :/

I'm seriously at the verge of just canceling UMPI and dropping BIO 105. Ugh. Just because I needed a "virtual lab" they decided to make the assignment 10x harder. Oh and I have to do the FINAL BEFORE the milestone now? I'm messaging Cody/Jessica to complain about this to see if they can get this fixed.

I did find a Coursera course that can fulfill a requirement for this GEC. I asked Jessica if I can do a one time coursera course for this requirement we'll see...

Keep in mind that, other than the Google ITSP credential, Coursera courses are all non-credit (not even alt credit). You could, however, potentially use it to support a PLA portfolio. I'd also ask about using something from Study.com (I know they have Bio 101, Microbio, and 1-2 Chem courses with virtual labs) - it would end up costing ~$250, but leaving UMPI now will put you quite a ways behind the end goal - a degree.

I agree; don't leave UMPI. You are so close! I'm sure you can find something, somewhere, to take. Giving up so close to the finish line would mean even more work and expenses for you.

I told Jessica/Cody about how bad this is, they agree the class needs to be reworked and they didn't realize how extreme it is.

To others going to UMPI: Consider taking bio elsewhere for now

If it is possible, substitute the class for something else if they allow. Such as a biology related Nutrition course or another subject in science altogether... there should be other options, don't they have other courses not as intense or demanding? If that course is 5 courses in one, they might as well break it down into 5 or whatever.
