I view public speaking classes similar to how many of us view English requirements... something that's so applicable and relevant to the real world that it's worth the extra effort, perhaps even butt-in-seat at a community college. especially if it's something you're uncomfortable with.
I'd never have gotten by in my job without basic presentation skills, and my job isn't a very social one. I mostly just sit in front of a computer all day.
