The labs only use a tiny fraction of the kit they tell you to buy. You could probably source everything you need locally.
I just took them from TESU but I get the ALPA tuition discount so they weren't insanely expensive. Comparatively speaking they are some of the easiest courses I've taken.
It is interesting that every path has at least one roadblock. I guess that is why so many people end up with a BALS. Personally, I'd prefer a more marketable degree. But any degree is probably better than no degree especially if it didn't cost as much as a house.
Physics I/Chem I are easy to get alt credit for. But you can't get Physics II/Chem II with alt credit. If you could, I'd be tempted to go with IT because a BS usually trumps a BA.
You're definitely right that a BALS is better than no degree. Especially when you're paying less than $5k for one (something that is absolutely possible now, even with the residency waiver hike at TESU). I do feel sorry for all the kids who get tricked into paying tens of thousands of dollars for a BALS at B&M schools and going deep into debt because they don't know what else to get. A BALS just isn't going to be worth that much for most people. Worth a few grand? Yes, absolutely. Worth a house? Absolutely not!
