On general vs specific degrees - I would say it depends on your purpose. For example, if your goal requires you to have a Master's degree, it won't matter what your undergrad major was. It will only matter that you finish. Also, a degree + professional certification or academic certificate is a great combination. The degree gets you to the next level of education and the additional credential gives you the desired specialization. It's also possible to backtrack at a later date and finish a second, more focused, degree without having to start over from scratch or fight for every transfer credit.
