With WGU there is activating and enrolling in the course.
You can activate a course at any time, which just locks you to the current version of the course. This will give you access to the course materials, pre-assessments, etc.
Enrolling in the course is what brings it into your term, and commits you to finish it during that term. You obviously only want to do this for courses you can finish during the time you have left.
Other CBE schools especially the ones with shorter terms should adopt a similar method.
Some courses end up being longer or harder than expected, so it would help to get a peek at the course before fully committing.
UMPI doesn't have activating and enrolling. You ask for a class to be added. It's added usually the next day and it's open to you and you're required to complete it within the term. You have zero access to classes until they're added to your account. You don't even know what classes are available. You have to ask your advisor which just gives them even more work.
