I've taken 18 CLEPs for 66 credits (so far) and haven't failed any of them. I've always gone in able to hit at least half of the questions on official CLEP study guide. If I couldn't hit half, I wouldn't take it. I've score as low as 53 (US gov, which surprised me greatly in its difficulty), and as high as 73 (sociology, which I thought was very easy). Most scores were 60-65 range.
I also basically would memorize all of the answers in the book before going in. It always surprised me how often those questions/answers would completely give away answers on the actual test.
