Does anyone know if this school is actually free? It looks like bachelors can be taken through here. Can credits be transferred in? https://www.uopeople.edu

Quote:University of the People...    ...is nationally accredited and recognized by the United States Department of Education (U.S.DoED), Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC). It is also approved by California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE).[4]

Quote:Tuition
The University of the People bills itself as "tuition-free". Nevertheless, there are costs that a student must pay:
  • Registration fee of $60 to register as a student at the University of the People[12]
  • Assessment fee of $100 for undergraduate assessments and $200 for graduate assessments for each exam a student takes[13]
To complete an associate degree (A.S.), a student must take 20 exams and 40 exams for a bachelor's degree, which cost a total of $2,060 and $4,060 respectively. For the MBA, a student has to pay a $200 exam fee per course for a total of 12 courses, which brings the total cost for the MBA to $2460.

You pay $100 at the end of each course to take a proctored exam, so while not free, it's affordable.

It's only Nationally Accredited, not Regionally.

They accept some transfer credit, including ACE:

Quote:Criteria for Considering a Transfer Credit
UoPeople may award 50 percent of the credits required for an undergraduate degree program (exceptions may
be made in special cases to a maximum of 75 percent) and a maximum of 50 percent for a graduate degree
program. Hence, UoPeople will apply no more than 45 transfer credits toward the completion of an Associate's
degree, no more than 90 credits toward the completion of a Bachelor's degree, and no more than 18 credits
toward the completion of a Master’s degree.
UoPeople will evaluate courses for those individuals who have submitted a complete application to study at
UoPeople, including enrolled students.

They will consider ACE and CLEP credits and you can earn up to 75% of your degree with transfer credit.

I read through their transfer policy. Unfortunately, they will only evaluate credit that's on a transcript...in other words there's no way to get an answer from them on the transferability of an outside course without taking it first. At least you don't have to pay their $17 per course evaluation fee until you actually transfer the courses.

"It is the University’s mission to provide affordable, tuition-free education for everybody. UoPeople is tuition-free, not free. You will never be asked to pay for courses, course material or annual enrollment fees. There is a nominal $60 Application Processing Fee for all applicants as well as a $100 Assessment Fee for each exam ($200 for the MBA). Based on this, an associate’s degree can be completed in 2 years for $2060, a bachelor degree can be completed in 4 years for $4060, and an MBA can be completed in 15 months for $2460. UoPeople will never request these amounts upfront, but rather students will pay each Assessment Fee by the end of each exam period. These modest fees ensure that the University remains sustainable and can continue to provide quality education for everybody.

There are scholarships available for those students who cannot afford the nominal processing fees of the University. It is the University’s belief that everyone deserves the right to an education, and that no one should be left behind due to financial constraints."

Last time I checked, they were out of general scholarships. The others were like for refugees from certain countries, and other specific requirements. It looks great for someone who can get scholarship(s).

Actually, I think it looks good for anyone who doesn't mind an NA degree. The price is certainly reasonable.
