ASBA though Thomas Edision State College, credit by exam, and SL

Kat0616 Wrote:I was told that College Algebra is easier then precalculus, and per the admin at TESC taking College Algebra will fulfill the math requirements, and can be taken though ALEKS.
I was using speedy prep, its just like instantcert, but it also has more CLEPs on it. However its seeming to me quite hard to learn enough from flash cards, ad trying to research what I need to learn to pass a CLEP or DSST, so I thought if I did them though SL, that I might be able to pass. Its been like 14 years since I was in HS. I am wanting to go after the BSBA so I will DEF add Business communications to my progress list.

If I'm remembering previous discussions right, ALEKS Trig is what is typically substituted in the BSBA pre-calculus requirement. Pre-calc and trig, in my opinion, were about equal in difficulty, which is probably why it is the more accepted substitute.

Maybe acceptable substitutes have changed, but I would confirm that information through the Registrar (in an email) before you take it. They are the ones that will receive the transcripts and ultimately determine what will and will not satisfy requirements.

Academic Program Advisor

I emailed over my word doc to her to make sure everything will count towards my degree program

So, she didn't specifically say that College Algebra would fulfill the requirement? Knowing TESC, she probably just quickly glanced over the document and said it was okay. Either that or she forgot that the ASBA requires precalculus or quantitative analysis. I hope you specifically asked if College Algebra would fulfill the precalculus or quantitative analysis requirement. It's easy for someone to overlook a mistake on a degree plan. As Mrs. B mentioned, the registrar has the final say. They can, will, and have rejected courses that were approved by an advisor.

Patricia Certo is a great advisor. She almost single-handedly assembled my degree plan with me by email, one course requirement at a time (I could never get my work schedule to free up time to get a phone appointment when one was available. Poor woman suffered a year of email bombs as I continually changed my mind.) If she is the one that gave the degree plan a nod, I'm more believing that maybe requirements have loosened a bit, but she's still human and may have overlooked that one course entry in the big doc of a full degree plan.

Still, I'd send a note back confirming that specific course equivalency. In my experience, she was pretty thorough in researching specific questions and giving accurate advice. Unlike quite a few others' experiences with TESC advisors, I did not have a single course rejected or misplaced by Registrar after she gave it a nod, but a big list of courses is more likely to result in an error.

It's probably human error. TESC's advisors are probably inundated with emails and phone calls about transfer credits. I had a good experience with one advisor, but I still have little faith in TESC's advisement department as a whole.

I'm always happy to complete the free application waiver for those applying to WGU (I get a free gift from WGU for this).  Just PM me your first/last name and a valid email so I can complete their form.

Are you asking me? I hope so that I won't look stupid answering you. LOL. I haven't quite decided what I'm going to do. I wanted to get into social services, but all of the job openings require experience or they end up hiring someone with experience. I'm also registered as a chemical dependency counselor intern, but I've only come across 2 openings for internships in the past year and I lost out on both of those. I'm in the application process for a few federal government positions, but the hiring process can take a year or two. In the meantime, it's either get a business degree and see if that will bring more opportunities my way or get a science degree to make myself more competitive for a high school teaching job. My last resort is to try out for the local police department. I'm also thinking about applying for a neuroscience program and I would need the science prerequisites anyway.

Even in Texas, this job market sucks. It's either work in the oil fields in some podunk town or get a job that pays less than $10 an hour. Almost all of the good paying jobs are in IT (but they want experience and are importing thousands of people from California and elsewhere), government, and the medical field (new nursing grads are not having an easy time right now). I'm lucky to get paid as much as I do now working as a civilian for an LE agency, but I absolutely hate my job.

It looks like the requirements might have changed. The website hasn't been updated, but my degree evaluation for the BSBA in CIS has updated to the new general education requirements. It now says that quantitative business analysis or college algebra is required. When I do a what-if evaluation for the BSBA in General Management based on the old catalog, it still says that precalculus is required.
