Where I work, one of the things that they love to see as you move up the ranks is PMP certification.
Eventually I will have to pursue this. But as of now I have no project management experience, so it will be a haul. To address this, I have been mulling over the idea of learning about project management through adding it as a minor to the BLS degree.
However, I am currently enrolled (and begin Monday) for the Liberal Studies degree with Management information Systems minor. (an area I do currently work in and would be immediately applicable/ relevant to my work).
UMPI has accepted 117 hours in transfer, so I'll just need to take the 10 courses with them to complete this degree. (I have no previous degrees- but a hodgepodge of classes from a few colleges, plus the study.com / sophia to round out the rest of the courses).
My questions are- is UMPI receptive to adding a second minor to a BLS degree? If so, is this something that must be requested prior to Monday, or would it be acceptable to do on-the-fly?
I've been on the fence regarding bringing this up, because in part, I'd like to see how taxing their classes are / how I like the online learning platform before finding out it may be possible and committing.
Does anyone have any information on this?
Thanks much in advance!

The biggest part of getting the PMP certification seems to be the work experience. https://www.pmi.org/certifications/proje...w-to-apply
you don't need to add a project management minor to be eligible to sit for the CAPM exam. There are relatively affordable PMI approved exam prep courses on Udemy. This one for example: https://www.udemy.com/course/capm-pmbok6/

I've got 1 year of experience, but am working under two mentors who technically hold the role. By the time I am eligible for promotion, I'm hoping to hold 2-3 years experience and to have worked from CAPM -> PMP or if I qualify, directly to PMP.
The Udemy courses do look good. I've also found on Coursera that U Illinois offers a specialization in Business Value and Project Management, and LearnQuest has a specialization in Scrum Master certification.
Those options notwithstanding, is it possible to add a 2nd minor, and if so, do I need to act now- or is it possible to add mid-term?
Thanks!

I would say add the PM minor. It may give you the opportunity to get more actual work experience if you can honestly say 'I minored in Project Management' in college; experience that you'll need in order to sit for the PMP. Having a college degree (in anything) allows you to have less PM experience, but it doesn't eliminate the requirement (and when you apply for the exam, you need to document the experience).

You can email the academic advisor and ask to add the PM minor, you just need to make sure you've got 30 credits left with UMPI to complete and verify which classes those are. If it's not to much extra energy, time to get this second minor, do so...

I started as a BLS MIS major this past term and ended up switching to BABA PM/MIS with a management minor.
You can definitely add the PM minor "on the fly." I switched to the BABA and added the minor "on the fly" you just have to let your advisor know.
Also, BUS 400 and 401 (PM courses) seem to be among the favorite UMPI courses for those who take them.

You can complete all 5 minors if you really want. I did 3. You don't have to declare them by Monday. All you have to do is email your academic advisor and let them know you want to add a second minor and which one. They'll take care of everything. You can add them at any point in the session.
