BS History Major Degree Plan--Excelsior College
#11
I put a great deal of time and effort into making my own degree plan from the one that started this thread. I would be very appreciative of any feedback anyone would like to provide. One plan goes for the depth area in psych, like alissaroot's plan. The other I tried to create a depth area for criminal justice (which would be much less studying for me) how does it look?

Great job Blu2blu!

As you know, EC does not accept the English CLEPs for English/humanities credit anymore. A&I Lit would be a possible replacement for humanities gen ed.

UExcel is another option for the English requirement.

When you find out if Alissa's plan for the history major is acceptable, please let us know. I have a friend who is interested in this major also.

Sorry I don't know enough to help with the CJ depth.

For a BS, you can have up to 60 credits in free electives - 50 LL (all military allowed here?), 9 UL, and 1 Info Lit. Since your major is history, that means you do not need the 2 exams in Social Science/History gen ed. That should allow you to use 9 more military credits. (I have been trying to figure out how the military credits work. I have not made much progress on my questions on the forum. I'm not sure, but I think what I have said would be okay. I'd really like to know more about it, like if any military credits count as Arts & Sciences. Please post an update when you learn more from EC. Thanks.)

NAP,

If I don't need the SS&H general ed credits do I still need 24 general ed credits overall? If not then I could utilize nine more military credits and that would bring down my pending exams to 16 - nice!

Our Military Credits are typically job related. Since I am an Electronics guy most of my credits are for "digital circuits" and things of that nature so they are almost all applied/professional. I can't think of any credits received during Military training that would possibly count as arts though I believe TESC gave me some science credit for some of my "Technical Math" Military credits. The only reason our credits are worth anything is because ACE says they are. If you go to their website you can see what credits various military jobs will get for you and how they apply.

There is a little note on the BS chart for Gen Ed/Depths/Majors in the Liberal Arts catalog, which says "Credits used to satisfy requirements in one area may simultaneously satisfy requirements in another area". To me, this means the history credits in your major can do double duty and count as major and gen ed at the same time. (You already have all 24 gen ed credits in your plan, some are just listed under the major section instead of the gen ed section. Just make a note for yourself in the gen ed section about this, after you check with your advisor.)

The catch is that as you make changes to your plan you must make sure that you have a minimum of 60 Arts & Sciences (with at least 21 UL) and a maximum of 60 Applied Professional. For instance, if you change your CJ depth to an Applied Professional category, you'll need to count your credits again and be sure you still have 60 A&S.

I think it is cool, too, because it will allow you to use more of the credits you have already earned.

Thank you for explaining the military credits. I have several friends and family in the military. I would like to be able to help them, if they decide to pursue a degree this way.

AHA!
94Steve,

Why didn't you take:

ECE World Populations
ECE Word Conflicts Since 1900

instead of War and American Society?

Does anyone have an answer for this?

Also, do I have to have 2 depth requirements? Can it be done with just one area of study in History?

Be careful with this thread because the History Major at EC has had some changes. In the latest Liberal Arts catalog at EC, they only include World Conflicts ECE toward the history major electives. That leads me to think that World Populations ECE is not considered History. (I'm not sure if your question is for TESC or EC.)

Yes, you need two depths, or one major and one depth, or one area of focus and one depth, or 2 majors, or 2 areas of focus. I think that is all of the possible combinations.
