Just to follow up, this is the response that I got:
"Only admitted students who matriculate are eligible to enroll in alternative courses offered at CSU Global, which includes the self-study assessment (SSA). This does mean that as a student you would have either had to complete a traditional 8 week course with us and still be an active student, or simultaneously be enrolled in a traditional 8 week course alongside a self-study assessment during your initial term."

i wonder what would happen if you signed up for an 8 week course and an SSA, but then dropped the 8 week course
Probably not worth being the lab rat to try it out, but just a thought.

There was a time you could take them on their own. It probably changed the same time they started calling them SSAs.

They were recommended, but I don't think many used them.
