When figuring out my son's plan for this, I was pondering how to get around paying $1K for every 3 credits he needs.
Depth 1:
EC has requirements of Intro to Lit, British Lit Survey, Shakespeare, Survey of American Lit, and a Research paper. Is the following an acceptable plan with EC?
CLEP A & I Lit for ~~ Intro to Lit (6 cr)
CLEP English Lit for ~~ British Lit Survey (6 cr)
TECEP Shakespeare test for ~~ Shakespeare (3 UL cr)
CLEP American Lit for ~~ American Lit Survey (6 cr)
Research paper (0 cr)
I know he will have to take 3 courses for Literary period, Literary genre, and Major Authors in addition to what I have above, totaling 30 credits (these will be upper level for a total of 12 UL for Depth #1)
Do you know if EC will take the CLEPs and TECEP that I have listed?
Thanks!

First of all, you'll probably want to know that Excelsior accepts the GRE Subject Test in Literature for credit. GRE Subject Tests Overview The test costs $130. EC awards credit depending upon the percentile score attained--the 35th percentile earns 3 credits, the 40th earns 6 credits, the 45th earns 9 credits...and so on up to the 80th percentile earning 30 credits. So, for $130, it is possible to test out of all of the requirements for the Literature in English Major except the Writing & Research in the Major requirement.
The exam options you listed should be fine. However, Thomas Edison has recently suspended some of their tests. As such, the TECEP Shakespeare is not currently available. No relaunch date has yet been announced.
Keep in mind that Ohio University also offers credit-by-exam options, including English courses. The genre studies requirement can be fulfilled by either Critical Approaches to Fiction or Critical Approaches to Drama. The Shakespeare requirement can be fulfilled with either Shakespeare: The Histories, Shakespeare: The Comedies, or Shakespeare: The Tragedies. Although I haven't confirmed this, it would seem likely that EC would take one of the Shakespeare courses for the Shakespeare requirement, and a second Shakespeare course for the major authors requirement.
Here are some schools whose distance learning courses, all priced under $600 per course with some as low as $375 per course, fulfill some of the requirements for the Major in Literature in English. This list is by no means exhaustive...simply just what I have bookmarked.
Texas Tech University
Adams State College
University of South Carolina
Brigham Young University
University of Georgia
Western Washington University
University of Florida

Just last night I was trying to find English courses that my son could take from universities online. And here you have given me just the list I needed! I will look into those today.
I didn't know that about the TECEPs; will have to put Shakespeare 'on hold' (I just know he would have had something interesting to say about that!). Do you know why TESC is suspending some of the tests?
And yes, the GRE is really looking like something to 'give the college try'. Only $130 so that is a bargain. My son loves literature and has read so much, so hopefully, that love and knowledge will help to make this all come together.
Thanks again!

My advisor had confirmed that one of the Ohio U's Shakespeare exams was acceptable to fulfill the single-author requirement. I suppose you could take two and use one for the Shakespeare requirement and the other for single-author.
I had a hard time finding any single-author courses which were not Shakespeare!

Just to throw one more cost cutting option out there, LSU Independent Study courses are only $250 per course, and they have several English courses you or your son may find interesting: LSU Independent and Distance Learning
Some of those may fulfill the genre studies (drama, the novel) or the period (Victorians, moderns) requirement? I'm not sure what will work for EC, but at that price they are worth looking into.
Good luck!

From reading your son's posts, I think he would enjoy preparing for this GRE. Another way to think about it would be, getting half the credits would be a depth, getting 2/3 of the credits would be an area of focus, and getting all of the credits would be a major.
Be sure to go to the official GRE site and get a practice test. Then check again in a year and see if they have posted a new practice test. I think getting as many practice tests as possible would be helpful.
Also consider taking the CLEPs anyway (even if they count as duplicate) as a way to prepare for the GRE.

Yes, yes, he would like to do this test. He thinks it would be 'fun' to study for it. Go figure...
And i like the idea of doing the CLEPs anyway for practice. That's good. As for waiting a year to do another practice test, well, I think he's chomping at the bit to get this bachelor's degree finished so he can start the master's. We'll see how the next couple of months go. Right, Ruddigore?

Okay, that's good that he might be able to take it "soon". It will be a long time before I take mine, so I am happy to collect all of the practice tests that I can! I know that the group who took this test a couple of months ago left lots of good feedback about the GRE on the forum for him to use.
