I'm currently studying Humanities and will take the Clep humanities sometimes in October. I will take English and American Literature. But, which should I take first, American or English Literature. What are be best book of these two subjects. I suspect analyzing and interpreting literature clep will easy to pass after I've taken and pass English and American Literature.

They are all Literature, but they all cover different things, I would say Analyzing was the easiest, Eng Lit seemed easier to me, some may disagree. I did A&I 1st, 2nd Eng, 3rd American. If I had to do them all over again, I would do it the same way.

For me it was the opposite - I found Am Lit much easier than Eng Lit - Am Lit covered less material (Eng Lit study pretty much begins around 1000AD/Am Lit much, much later), and contained a lot less analyzing (a positive for me). Since analyzing is my weak point, I began with Am Lit, (which built up my confidence regarding analysis), moved to A & I, then took Eng Lit.
All that being said, I'd begin with whatever subject you think will be the easiest for you and progress from there...
Good Luck!
P.S.
My best advice is to sign up for IC and head over to the Specific Exam Feedback - lots of info regarding all the Lit tests.
For Am Lit - my favorite book was "The Idiots Guide to American Literature"
"I dwell in Possibility." Emily Dickinson

Analyzing is a reading comprehension exam- so you'll be asked to read poetry and prose and then answer questions about the selections. In other words, you don't have to learn anything "new" for that test. Both American and English require knowing (and in my case- learning) extensive amounts of new information - authors, works, genres, dates, periods, and some light history surrounding certain authors (eg. Slavery & Harriet Beecher Stowe).
So, I guess if I had to pick which were easier (American or English) I'd say it's the one that you've done the most reading in. For me, I'd read a lot of American authors in high school, so that was the obvious choice.
