College Comp essays
#1
I'm studying to take College Comp which of course has two mandatory essays. A few questions...

Are the questions on IC like the ones I will see on the actual test? Like will I have to answer questions about what is wrong in a sentence (like pronoun error, subject/verb agreement, etc) Will there be fill-in-the-blank questions on the real test?

Where can I get sample essay prompts? I hear one essay is written on personal experience and is very similar to the essay on the SAT or ACT. Any advice here? The other essay I hear you must read two sources and write and essay correctly citing the sources. I have no idea how to do this and would like some practice....how do I do that?

Thanks,

No it's not like IC. Buy the Official CLEP Study Guide. It tells you everything. Also google SAT essay prompts, they are very similar in style. The study guide has a sample essay test and example essays at different score levels.

Yes you will have to answer questions about pronoun error, subject/ verb agreement... There were no fill in the blank questions at all for questions part of the test I took, and I assume there are none for any other version of the test. They give you 5 choices, and you have to choose the BEST answer.

Here's a thread that might help you out http://www.degreeforum.net/general-educa...ition.html In it I gave some advice on how you can better prepare for the essays.

I hope this helps

I do not understand about the second essay where you must cite your sources. Could someone explain how this works? I never had to do this in HS, I always just made a bio list on a separate page but this obviously isn't what they want.

Put quotation marks (") around your quote, and afterwards just a few words telling where you got your quote: the name of the person who came up with the quote, the title of the book the quote came from...

Here are a few examples for an essay on "The Use of Money":

Example 1: "I found this national debt, doubled, wrapped in a big bow waiting for me as I stepped into the Oval Office," President Barack Obama.

Example 2: "A penny saved is a penny earned," Benjamin Franklin.

Example 3: "When I was young I thought that money was the most important thing in life; now that I am old I know that it is," Oscar Wilde.

Basically you insert quotations to back up any kind of point that you make. It makes your argument more sound and convincing. Citing your sources just means that you credit the author when you quote him/her.

Now for the second essay, they will provide you with two sources to quote from. I just put my quote in parenthesis and "Source 1" or "Source 2" to cite. I'm not sure if I should have done it that way, but I did.
Does this answer your question?
