Coursera.org and Excelsior
#1
Hi All!

I emailed Excelsior today to see if they will accept coursera.org courses and this was their response.

Thank you for your email. U. of Michigan and U. of Emory are both
regionally accredited universities and therefore, we will consider them as
transfer. The requirement of which they will transfer to satisfy is going
to depend on what degree you are interested in applying for. In order to
review credit students must submit an official copy of their transcript (in
a sealed envelope sent directly from the school to Excelsior). What degree
program are you interested in and when are do you hope to get started?

I emailed them back and stated that they do not do transcripts for non-matriculated students and instead issue a certificate of completion. Stanford even issues honors on the certificates. Certificates come with unique number identifiers that the courses were completed.

I've also sent emails to COSC and TESC.

Of course my local community college which is the worst asked if Duke was an accredited college...

I think the person who answered you is confused. Excelsior only accepts credits from regionally accredited schools or courses that are recommended for credit by ACE or NCCRS. Sometimes, they will accept courses from nationally accredited schools. Besides the Coursera courses that are ACE-approved, their courses are unaccredited and not recommended for credit by an organization recognized by Excelsior. You can use them to complete PLAs, however.
