That was sound advice. That ALEKS thread was very informative...I've read the whole thread twice!!!
If I were you AirSick I would just take the courses through ALEKS and once completed, get them on an ACE transcript. After that, send the transcript to your school and let the games begin. Even if they don't accept it...you really haven't lost anything...except for $20 per month which comes out to about $0.67 cents per day!!! I think you can manage that!
Just to confirm...what school are you going through?
Chat with ya later and keep us posted. Worst case scenario...we call up all the IC members, load up a couple of vans, and hold a protest in front of the Dean's office!!!hilarious
Peace be with you.

he, he, sounds like you had a bad experience!!!!

Going forward, please remember this. NEVER EVER bring up anything "different" to an advisor. You're setting yourself up to fail. First---ask your advisor do they follow ACE guidelines and recommendations for college credit. If they say "yes," then you mention ALEKS or whatever. When you do it that way first, you put them on the spot.
It's just human nature...we are so quick to shun what we don't understand.
If you're advisor comes back and says "no," ask her/him why not. Because if they say they accept ACE courses on a transcript but have accepted other courses...that makes them (imho) full of bull-malarky. At that point, I would find out who REALLY has the AUTHORITY to make those kinds of decisions and appeal yourcase to that person. I don't put to much stock in counselors/advisors because half of them don't know diddly squat.
***NO OFFENSE TO ANYONE on this forum whose family member is a guidance counselor/college academic adviser***
I'm getting really sick and tired of talking to people in these capacities who are totally clueless about "non-traditional" means of obtaining college credit. At my local cc, I had to explain their own CLEP/DSST policies to them!!! That is ridiculous! I had one counselor look at me stupid when I asked her about an ACE transcript. I then proceeded to tell her what ACE stands for and she still kept looking at me stupid like she had tumbleweeds rolling around in her brain.
I had another advisor tell me the exact opposite of what was in their course catalog. Then proceeded to tell me after I presented my case that she would "get back to me." Get back to me? Get off your lazy ($)*$**) and go get a catalog or pull it up online...how long does that take to do...GEEEESHHHH.
The part that really ticks me off is that these folks (at least at my local cc for sure) are making a pretty decent salary and I could do what they do now and I've only been at this for less 15 months!!! And I can't get a job as a counselor because I don't have my degree yet...go figure!!!!
Sorry about the rant!!! I just woke up!!!
Hope this info helps. Peace be with you (and me!)

Marshall

Anyway to go around this advisor to another one.
She totally does not know what she is talking about..............
AirSick Wrote:Here is the response when I asked her about ACE courses on transripts
I wouldn't be able to advise you on what Statistics course through ALEKS to take. We don't offer the Principles of Statistics examination, so it may be helpful to contact DANTES to find out if they have a recommendation.
We sometimes accept ACE credit on a transcript. It depends on the course/credit recommendation listed on the transcript. Have you taken credit that was evaluated by ACE?

Me too. I am going against the great advice from people smarter than me here and leaving it to the last. I just keep pushing it off. I need College Math and Stats, I hope they don't prove to be the deal breaker in my quest for the degree.

I'm going to EC and here is what I'm trying. Since I need stats too and I'm dreading it I've decided to try this. I've read through the ALEKS thread and found a link to get a free month with ALEKS. I signed up and was approved. Now here is the kicker. None of the higher education courses are free, but they do offer AP statistics free. So I signed up for that free for a month. I'm planning on working through it as best as I can. Depending on how I do I plan on signing up for the Intro to Stats course. I figured if nothing else it will allow me to really finish up the Intro course in a month. Then all I will be out is the $20. I figured it was worth a shot to then have it transcribed by ACE and submit it to EC. I figure the worst case scenario is they don't accept it, but for $20 and 2 months of working with it, I have a much better chance of actually passing the DANTES exam if they don't. I know I wouldn't be able to pass it on my own, as I have already tried reviewing some books and items here! My mind was ready to expload! I'm sure this isn't for everyone, but 2 months of actual working through it vs trying to learn it on my own...this was my least painful option! I wish you the best of luck!

My daughter did the Intermediate Algebra during her free month trial. Is that not considered higher education? I do know that it was not in the inital drop down menu of courses to choose from but I called and they told me how register for it. You might want to call them and see if you can switch to Intro to Stats. I didn't ask them if I was allowed to switch. I just asked them how to switch and they helped me. : )
