I'm in the same boat. I have been studying the IC cards for the last week and it helped a lot. I did some searches on Google and I also recommend the exam feedback link for some good advice from those who have taken the exam.

Peterson's tests aren't a good indicator of what to expect. The actual test is easier. Pick up "Cracking the CLEP". "The Complete Idiots Guide to Grammar and Style" is helpful as well.

This exam is no joke, well at least it wasn't for me. The CLEP English Comp w/Essay is the only exam I've failed. The bigest problem I had was time. I ran out of time on the multiple choice section and had to guess on the last two questions. A couple of the passages were painful to read and I would have been smart to skip them. The essay topic was straitforward, but was a bit of a challenge since I type roughly 10 words a minute.
Anyway, I scored a 49, yes 49, missed it by 1.

As I understand, both exams cover the same ground, but obviously you need to write more for one, and the other is all m/c or fill in the blank. Also, w/o essay = 3 credits, WITH ESSAY= 6 credits. You may need the second portion of credits. I know TESC requires the essay(or class equivalant0 for ANY degree. For more info, go to the exam-specific thread. You will need to join, but I can honestly say that it is the best money I have ever spent in my life.

Okay, people....here is how I studied for the exam:
Since I graduated from high school in 2007, I had a very solid foundation in English (I used the A Beka curriculum for homeschoolers when I was in high school). Anyway, to start, I first bought the Comex guide for the CLEP English Composition. I studied all of that and took the practice tests. I also used Princeton Review's
Cracking the CLEP. I then took the test and passed with a 73.
I took the English Comp w/ essay, because I heard it was easier, and because some colleges require the essay. But I know that both exams are very similar in content.
If you master the material in the above books, you should do fine. I'm not sure what you mean by cramming, saleen, but this is how I studied.
Also, always make sure to check out the Specific Exam Feedback post on this forum for your particular test.

What Levi said!
Also, I highly recommend reading The Elements of Style by Strunk and White, a highly enjoyable and informative starter volume on how to think about grammar. But only a starter: IC, etc. is a must as well.
