Get a second Bachelor's at UMPI?
#1
This just struck me yesterday.  So is here is my situation.  I worked in digital marketing from 2003 - 2012.  I attended Georgia State University from 2011 - 2020 and graduated with a political science degree.  All of my credits were earned the traditional way taking classes at the school.

I have worked in politics sporadically since graduating.  I spent the most time doing marketing for a non-profit until I was laid off last year.  My goal is to eventually go to grad school for a Masters in poli sci or a MPP.  But at the moment I don't feel ready.  I have been out for so long and want to take some specific classes first like statistics and macro and micro-econ as I think that would make me a stronger applicant.  I also currently have no relationships with professors who could write letters of recommendation.

In the more immediate, I have been job hunting for a year.  I have been looking mostly for a marketing kob.  Something that pretty much every job ad says they want you to have a degree in marketing, communications or something related.  I know poli sci is not but I thought my experience would overwrite that but that's not happening.  But if I had a degree in marketing?

I was reading about UMPI yesterday and did a deep dive in the wiki.  So I understand if you already have bachelor's they will wave the general education requirements.  I got the Straightlerline free semester.  Between that and ASU EA classes I could transfer 90 credits iin.  I just would need to earn 30 credits at UMPI...which some people do in one session?  And a session is $2800?

I have no money at the moment and was planning on starting an EA stats class next week but one way or another I will be working soon.

Are you able to develop relationships with professors at UMPI?  I don't have a good idea of budget for this and I would be going to class while working full time.

To clarify, you've already met that 90 credit requirement! All circa 120 credits from your prior bachelor's at Georgia State will transfer in today. An occasional specific course from Straighterline, ASU, etc. to meet a specific requirement in the UMPI business administration major or marketing concentration might be helpful.

You need to earn 30 credits as UMPI. At the same time, you need to meet every specific requirement for your major and concentration, which here is the YourPace Business Administration major, Marketing concentration. The new credits you need to meet those specific requirements might exceed 30; it depends what you have already. Some of those specific requirements can be met with courses transferred from Straighterline, Sophia, your prior bachelor's, etc.

We've had numerous reports of completing 30 credits at UMPI in one session. One undergraduate YourPace session is $1800, not $2800. Each session runs eight weeks.

In maybe every report of completing with one session at UMPI, some of the major coursework has been transferred in from outside UMPI. For example, instead of taking BUS 101 Introduction to Business at UMPI, they will have taken Introduction to Business from Sophia.

Note that most reports of Business Administration majors completing in one session have been in a different concentration, especially Management and Leadership. The concentration coursework in Marketing has a reputation as a bit slower going than average. One session would surprise me for the Marketing degree plan. Two sessions wouldn't surprise me. No guarantees of course, and much depends on each student.

Alternately, you could take Straighterline Introduction to Statistics which is free to you now. If you want a statistics course in graded credit from a college, you could take one from UMPI during your time there. MAT 101 Basic Statistics is currently offered in YourPace. There's also a good chance they'll add MAT 201 Probability and Statistics I and MAT 202 Probability and Statistics II in the next several months when they add the Computer Science major.

You would come out of UMPI with professors who recognize and can speak to the quality of your work. You can share a résumé and cover notes with them to let them know more about you. Although the accelerated direct-assessment workflow at YourPace doesn't make for the closest professor-student relationships, many students seem to have obtained references for graduate school.

You already have a bachelor's degree so you probably wouldn't need a ton of classes outside of UMPI. You don't have much contact with professors. Many students are in their class only a week or 2 so it's not 15 weeks like when you went to school at Georgia State. If you contact them at the beginning of the course and let them know that you need to get letters of recommendation for grad school, some will be happy to provide a letter. You may need to contact them more than just submitting the assignments.

StraighterLine is just for general education and electives, your previous degree should have that covered already. Did you complete or finish the HAU MBA? My suggestion is to do the BABA PM & IS plus the Marketing concentration, you can make sure to take the 2-4 classes that go towards the MAOL/MSB as well just in case you wanted to do a MAOL or MSB with a communications concentration later. A session at the undergrad level is $1800, at the graduate level it's $2450, how much is your tuition assistance or reimbursement from work? You can try completing the BABA in 1-2 sessions and then repeat the same for the Masters level next year.

Additionally, a few StraighterLine courses appear to transfer to your business administration major. PlottedPath's spreadsheet lists

BUS 150: Introduction to Financial Accounting
BUS 220: Managerial Accounting
COM 210: Organizational Communication

Straighterline Business Communication, which is part of your free bundle, is listed as going toward UMPI Organizational Communication. Straighterline charges an an additional fee for each of the other three courses.

Straighterline Calculus I could meet your business major math requirement, but Study.com Business Math would be easier if you could afford a month of Study. Sophia Calculus I might also be easier as I think Straighterline Calculus I still has a proctored test, while Sophia doesn't. If in lieu of or in addition to a Marketing concentration you go for a Management and Leadership concentration, Straighterline could fulfill Organizational Behavior.

The reason I mentioned it's general education and electives is because, I think it's not worth it to use StraighterLine for anything else. People need to review Sophia.org, Study.com and StraighterLine classes and discounts offered, then compare and see what would fit them most. Here's an updated post/thread in regards to their newest pricing: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...ng-changes

I think this is out-of-date for the OP now that UMPI demoted so many Sophia and Study courses from meeting specific business requirements (which the OP needs) down to electives (which the OP doesn't need as they have a prior bachelor's).

To meet the UMPI Managerial Accounting or Organizational Communication requirements in the Business Administration major, there are Straighterline courses UMPI accepts but there are no longer Sophia or Study courses UMPI accepts.
