As far as wars and battles are concerned, don't spend to much time on them... Know the basics of the wars, forget about battles. Most importantly, know why the wars were waged, and what kind of results came about afterward. That's just one small note. Another is to know some of the authors of the time period.
I highly suggest taking a look at the specific exam feedback area. IC is great for the US Histories!! This test deals with... guess what? HISTORY! And while there will always be opinions, biasses, etc. A lot of the test is just facts. You may wish to check this out: History of the United States I CLEP Free Study Guide - Free-Clep-Prep.com Go through IC's cards, read through the Specific Exam feedback, go over the link from FCP, and take a PT or two (of course going over your wrong answers). Do that and you'll be more then set!

If your screen name means that you are a Texas A&M student, I seem to recall that they require a score that is significantly higher than 50. If so, be sure to use a lot of resources for this exam and give yourself enough time to study. REA is an excellent start for this one.

You are better off reading the IC specific exam feedback forum. You can't go wrong.
I myself studied it through Straighterline and found it immensely interesting. (I only studied NZ and European history when I was at school.) I am not from the US (I'm from New Zealand living in Australia). If I can pass it being foreign, no reason why you can't. Good luck

The specific feedback section should answer most of your questions about preparing for the exam. My personal opinion is that IC's flashcards are enough to get you a pass if you know them well.
