How come these aren't TESU GenEd-worthy?
#1
I realize I'm being dense. Sorry.

I am about 15 credits and a capstone away from Being Done.

I want to portfolio the remainder.

All I need is an upper level in my liberal study concentration, and the remainder in additional general education electives.

I made a list of potential things I could successfully portfolio, and these were told to me to be Free Electives and not GenEd-worthy. Is this right, and why?
  • Electronic Mail Systems (CAP-306)
• Hazard Communication (ENT-363)
• Law for Security Personnel (AOJ-332)
  • Search and Seizure (AOJ-357)
• Sex Crimes and the Law (AOJ-352)
• Telecommunications Technology I (ELC-351)
  • Electronic Communication Systems (ELC-201)
• Electronic Measurements (ELT-241)
• Fire Investigation Methods (legal) (FIS-332)
• Handling of Hazardous Materials (FIS-212)
• Hazardous Materials Health and Safety (ENT-272)
  • Homicide Investigation (AOJ-441)
  • Introduction to Safety and Health (HEA-201)

Sorry about the jacked up formatting. Thanks in advance!!

Hey, I just wanted to say "maximize" the 17-20+ general education electives and the 27 FREE electives as much as you can, and take the cheap/easy/fast Shmoops! Why won't you list the other credits you've completed? See if you can switch some around, it won't really matter as long as you're able to get the AOS completed.

One more question, are you going for a non concentration BALS, or with a concentration? If non concentration, get it done with Shmoops! Good luck my friend! Anyways, I look forward to seeing your credit list... you might be there already if you have sufficient UL in the AOS. Cheers for now...

Oh, wanted to add a link to this post: http://degreeforum.net/mybb/showthread.p...&tid=27246
And here's the answer I provided a couple of months ago or so, it should be the same in your case.

Thanks for the response.

I'll list where I'm at if it's helpful, but I've kind of already beat Admissions to death on application.

It's not coming over, I'll have to really reformat it. Wait one.

Not interested in shmoop, really. If I had to, it would be study.com to take advantage of the discounting, but I want credits in the areas I am interested in. Maybe I am overthinking it, that's what I've done the entire journey.

Ok

Not sure I can help with your 2nd post, since I can't tell where they are on the eval. But I can tell you a couple of things:

Anything with AOJ is a SocSci, and should be counted as a Gen Ed Elective. So the 3 courses you have listed should work there.

CAP, FIS, and HEA are Free Electives, unless you have a degree that would use these in the AOS (the BALS doesn't fit the bill).

ELC, ELT, and ENT, I don't know, but I'm guessing the same as those 3.

If you look at TESU's list of Gen Ed's, you need to remember that Gen Ed's are Humanities (COM, REL, HUM, ART, MUS, etc.) Social Sciences (HIS, AOJ, PSY, SOC, etc.) and Natural Sciences/Computer Sciences. If it doesn't fit into one of those areas, then it's not a Gen Ed, it's a Free Elective (for BALS purposes).

NOW, if you are getting a degree that would use/require these courses in the Core/AOS, then you're talking about something else entirely. For example, business courses (MAN, MAR, ACC, FIN) are also not Gen Ed's, and so would be free electives - unless you were getting a business degree, in which case those courses would fit into the Core/AOS.

But the Gen Ed's are particular courses, and TESU is not going to budge on those. EC and COSC also don't call everything Gen Ed's (Arts & Sciences at EC, Liberal Arts at COSC). Here's COSC's sheet on what is and is not a Liberal Arts course: https://www.charteroak.edu/current/acade...ements.cfm

This is not true. Some AOJ courses are social science. It depends on the content of the course. Anything that is mostly applied will not be counted as a social science. There has to be a significant theory portion to the course.

I did not know that.  Thanks for clearing it up.  I just assumed that since the AOJ courses are listed on the Gen Ed 2016 page on their website, that all AOJ courses counted that way.

So 4 Gen Ed, 1 UL and the Capstone. That is pretty good. Gen Eds are some of the easiest to get. You could add a few more math courses from Alek or some study.com classes to get the discount. Looks like you could use one of study.com's psych courses to fill out the UL.
So you were a criminal justice major? Is that something you are still interested in? I would hate to see those courses wasted on a BALS unless it was going to be significantly more expensive to get another kind of degree or unless you just needed something really fast. (Not an insult to the BALS because that is my degree program - I just think if you are already close to something more career specific its best to spend a little more and take a little more time if you can).

As per TESU's website, you can get a BALS with CJ concentration: http://www.tesu.edu/heavin/ba/Liberal-Studies.cfm
II. Area of Study: Liberal Studies
Students select option A or B
A. Students complete a total of 30 credits of Liberal Studies courses that include at least 15 credits at the 300/400 level and no more than 6 credits at the 100 level.
B. Students select an 18-credit concentration from the list below and complete an additional 12 credits of Liberal Studies courses.

Communications
Computer Science
Criminal Justice
General Management
Health and Wellness
Human Resources Management
Humanities
Labor Studies
Natural Sciences/Mathematics
Psychology
Social Sciences

However, it really doesn't matter at this point as you're just missing "general education" credits for getting the BALS.
As I mentioned, you can get it cheap/easy/fast with the Shmoop courses. If you don't want to take those, you can try Saylor.
And as another option, take 2 Study.com courses, if you haven't already, to get the cheaper capstone tuition/residency waiver fee.
