How difficult is CIS-3110 Database Management
#1
I'm doing a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies at TESU and I'm looking at taking Database Management (CIS-3110). It doesn't list any prerequisites, but it is an upper-level course. I haven't taken any programming or college algebra courses. I took algebra in high school and was good at it, but I don't remember much of it as that was several decades ago, ha. I haven't done MAT-1050 Applied Liberal Arts Math yet either. I did create six FileMaker Pro databases at a job. FileMaker Pro is a low-code database application. I did scripting and worked with relational databases, so I'm a little familiar with database development. How easy or hard is this class for someone like me? Is this something I would be able to do or is it going to be way over my head? If you've done the class, how was it for you?

The Database Management course uses OpenOffice Database for the software. This is the course description:

This course provides students with fundamental concepts of databases and database management systems (DBMS). It offers terminology, conceptual approaches, and practical approaches when designing and implementing different database types. Students will learn design considerations and solutions with a DBMS, using various industry standards and models available. Analytical and problem-solving skills will be strengthened. The material also includes common tools and techniques utilized to optimize performance and secure the database and related resources. Other topics covered include: entity relationship diagrams (ERD); Structured Query Language (SQL); information and decision making; and data normalization.

For TESU CIS-3110 Database Management 3 upper level credits, I recommend you transfer it from Study.com Computer Science 303: Database Management instead of taking the class at TESU. Basically, you should only take 2 classes at TESU, the cornerstone and capstone, you can then pay the residency waiver fee to graduate.

Having said that, if you want to do the flat rate 15 credits, you can add 3 extra classes or e-packs in addition to the cornerstone and capstone. It's something you should decide on, it's a really good idea to fill in the addendum and template to give an overall picture of what exactly you're trying to do accomplish and what you currently have in regards to credits.

I am trying to fulfill my residency requirement. I already did six credits in courses (the cornerstone course + PLA courses). With the capstone, I will have nine credits, so I only need to do six more credits. I received a $2,500 scholarship and I'm eligible for up to $7,395 in federal grant money through FAFSA, so I can do two courses for free. In order to use the grant money, I have to register for courses and I have to register for the June 2025 term.

I am doing some of my Gen Ed requirements (Writing I and II, Liberal Arts Math, and American Government) through Modern States who then gives me CLEP vouchers to take the CLEPs for free.

I am doing as many exams as I can (TESU, CertiPort, DSST) that don't require me to do a course, but allow me to simply study and take the exam. Fast method for me.

I have lots of experience in courses that are not available by exam, so I am doing PLAs too.

I could do any two of the following electives for the June 2025 term:
- ART-1000 A World of Art (ZTC)
- CIS-3110 Database Management
- PHO-1010 Introduction to Photography
- SPA-1010 Elementary Spanish I

My Location: California
My Age: 47
What kind of degree? Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies
Current Regional Accredited Credits: 30 through TESU
Current ACE, CLEP, or NCCRS Credits: 42
Any certifications or military experience?: No
Budget: $0
Commitments: Job (although I might only be working part-time over the summer)
Dedicated time to study: 2 hours daily
Timeline: Registering for June 2025 term
Tuition assistance/reimbursement: $2,500 scholarship + up to $7,395 Pell Grant for 2024-2025 Year. Pell Grant usually gets cut in half / split up in thirds or fourths, so I'm not sure how much will be available for June 2025 term. Just filled out my FAFSA.

From the looks of things, you're doing the 15 credits by taking courses plus the other 15 credits using TECEPs to get your 30 RA credits total. TESU only requires 30 RA credits and 15 residency credits, if you're not going to use the residency waiver fee (now known as the Accelerate Fee). Having said that, you can always do the TECEPs to 24 credits and take the cornerstone/capstone and pay the Accelerate Fee.

Anyways, I suggest something different, you can review these threads here to see which options would work for you. Some may want an extra associates or another bachelors, it really depends on your use case scenario and how you want to do things. I would do a bit more research until you decide which class you want to take in addition to the current classes you have completed for residency purposes.

Question: For your PLA, did they give you a max of 15 credits? 3 for the PLA class and up to 12 for the classes you can PLA with. If that was the case, don't you already have at least 15 RA credits, in addition to the 15 you'll be completing through TESU? Here are a few links from me illustrating options for you to investigate further.

I mainly wanted to know how easy or difficult the Database Management course is? Should I post that question in a different thread? Is there a Computer Science thread?

No, I haven't taken that class at TESU, it should be pretty straight forward, I doubt it'll be difficult... Give some time for people to respond, some may have taken it, I looked at the WIKI, it wasn't mentioned, neither did the class review thread. https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Th...University

I took it. It's basically relational databases and SQL. You have to create a few small example databases and queries to do prescribed things. If you understand the concepts behind databases, you'll find it pretty easy.

I honestly spent as much time figuring out the quirks of OpenOffice's database app as the concepts in the course.
