Oracle Info
#1
Hi, all! I'm looking into this for someone, and thought this wonderful forum would be a good place to start. I know nothing about Oracle, other than I think there are different "levels." Any information from the basic "what it is" to more what I'm after "where to study, cost, testing options, etc." is appreciated!

The person I'm looking into this for is very busy with a full-time managing job. Has lots of computer experience (programming, database, etc - I'm not sure what all...). I said I'd find out what I could and present the options. He would need any training/testing/studying to be able to be done on evenings and Saturdays, and for it to not last forever that way. Is there a site like InstantCert for certifications such as and including Oracle? Are there recommended textbooks and practice tests? I'm starting at square one here, not knowing anything about this myself, so really, anything y'all know will be helpful and much appreciated!

Thanks!
~ Laura ~

Here is a good place to start:

Oracle Certification Program: Oracle Technology and Applications Certification

I passed one of the exams using a book from Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Oracle-Database-Al...448&sr=8-1 . After studying the book and doing the practice tests that came with it, I purchased more practice tests at Transcender.com.

The SQL fundamentals exam was the toughest test I've ever taken in my life. The real exam was more difficult than the Transcender exams which, in turn, were more difficult than the practice exams in the book. Someone who has worked with queries for a long time will have an advantage. I've only had classroom (community college) experience + self-study.

Go to Amazon and search for ocp database certification guide. Buy a highly rated book and study it.

Go to https://login.oracle.com/mysso/signon.jsp and click the link to create a free Oracle web account. Use this account to download and install Oracle. Practice and learn how to use the products.

Test Prep for Certification Preparation ? Kaplan SelfTest has a longer history of developing Oracle practice tests than Transcender. Both are owned by Kaplan.

When taking practice tests, never answer a question unless you are 100% of your answer and understand why all of the other answer choices are wrong. You want to make your learning efficient and effective. You need to use the practice tests to identify your weaknesses, not guess your way to a higher score. What you don't actually know should be flagged as a miss so that you'll know to go back and study it until it is mastered.
