Learn Mandarin?
#1
Some friends are adopting a child whose native language is Mandarin. They have 6-9 months more in the process before they can go get her, and while they wait, they are interested in learning some of the language to help in the transition. What is a good resource? The child is learning a little English too (or so they've been told) but they do not want to rely on that.

I vaguely recall a conversation here a year (+/-) ago where someone mentioned Rosetta Stone was not good for that language and some alternatives were suggested, but my search skills are failing me and I cannot find the thread now.

I've had great success with Pimsleur courses. I haven't tried the Mandarin language specifically, but I'd still recommend the Pimsleur courses. It doesn't just stuff your head with vocabulary; it actually gets you to start having real conversations. The first lesson can be tried out for free.

A co-worker, who had majored in Spanish, said his wife used the Pimsleur series to learn Spanish. My co-worker was impressed with it.

My library has access to Mango, and I think it teaches Mandarin.

Thanks, all! I passed along the Pimsleur suggestion and they are taking a look.

The BBC website has Chinese listed in their learning language portion...when you pull the "Chinese" page up it specifies Mandarin.

Is there a local community of Mandarin speakers? For the people living out here would have such an opportunity as there is a Chinese church.

Definitely Pimsleur! I used this before moving to China and it made a huge difference. My wife is from mainland China and (obviously) speaks Mandarin as a native language. She's agreed that I learned a lot from Pimsleur.
