Lewis University Online DEng in Data Science

Lewis University is introducing a Doctor of Engineering in Data Science, its first DEng, available online or in person.

“With a prior master’s degree in Data Science or a closely related field, a minimum of 54 credit hours are required. […] Without a prior master’s degree in data science or closely related field, a student must earn a minimum of 84 credit hours, but may need up to 93 credit hours depending on whether the student must take foundation courses.”

The program design stands on interesting project-based and interdisciplinary legs. “You will be able to engage in an interdisciplinary project that spans multiple semesters (18 credit hours). These can be collaborative projects with persons or organizations outside of data science. You will have the ability to take up to 12 credit hours in courses outside of the department. This will provide you with more domain knowledge in the field or industry you want to work in.”

DEng tuition is $875 per credit hour x 54 = $47 250 for the 54-credit scenario.

Lewis University is a Roman Catholic (Lasallian) institution in Romeoville, Illinois with about 7000 students, regionally accredited. It’s currently US News Regional Universities Midwest #29.

This is a very strong program, especially in comparison to the DEng in AI & ML at GWU.

This is an interesting program, and I've shared it with others who might be looking to have some fun times in Data Science. I like that there is the potential to complete this in 42 credits if you bring in 12 credits of transfer credit (provided you have a Data Science master's degree and meet the transfer criteria for the additional 12 credits).

I know this isn't a GWU DEng thread, but it was mentioned, so I'll comment. Now that I've hit about the halfway point, where we are transitioning to the Praxis, my biggest critique (other than the cost) is that the program isn't doing anything to bridge the first half of the coursework and the research phase. It might as well be two separate programs, a master's AI/ML and a research project. In my cohort, we are developing the proposal now, but there has been no guidance on academic writing, research methods, etc., unless that is supposed to come after the proposal is developed (it's not clear what we are doing for next year).

That's a really damning review IMHO. If anything, that's the most important thing they should be providing!

I agree 100% (of course) that everything leading up to this point should have prepared everyone for developing a strong proposal, how to conduct research, quantitative vs. qualitative, methodology, everything. These things are only being discussed in a lecture on a Saturday with a deliverable due the upcoming Thursday. For many of the students, it's likely the first time they have had to do any of this, or perhaps they may not even have known about these things. I can only help that for the next 13 months, they have allocated to Praxis research, they will have advisors who will help guide those students who need help in the right direction.

Ok, enough hijacking this thread with GWU stuff. Maybe I should make a thread for each of my active programs and provide updates/reviews when each is completed...

Looks like a solid alternative to Eastern University PhD in Data Science if they ever get that off the ground.

In "dissertation only" programs offered in the UK and elsewhere, they often have formal course requirements for research writing and methodologies. And even when they don't doctoral advisors will often require such training for those who do not already have it.
