MIS Minor at UMPI
#1
I'm beginning my journey at UMPI in March at the start of the spring II term.  I have 10 classes to take at UMPI and I will have my BBA in Supply Chain Management completed.  I'm looking at potentially tacking on a minor for Management Information Systems.  I have some down time between now and when classes start (I only have 1 Study.com class to finish at this point and I'm averaging about 5 days per class on those).  Looking at the MIS minor requirements, I only need two additional courses to complete my MIS minor with those beging :

Business 245:  Programming for Managers
Business 345:  Database Management

From my research Coursera certificates for IBM Data Analysis and Visualization foundation will cover Business 345 and Google Data Analytics will cover Business 245.  Would you recommend completing these two certificates to get the credit and the certification or would you recommend just taking the two classes at UMPI.  Which will be faster and have the most bang for the buck?  I'm sure I could finish 12 classes in 2 terms at UMPI.

So it is possible to add a BLS minor (MIS) to a BABA degree?

I did both those certificates and found them interesting and not too difficult, except for the course mistakes made in the curriculum and lab assessments. If you do them, look in the communications between students and the instructors in the lab submission areas for hints about glitches and mistakes, how to work around them.

I haven't verified with Jessica yet because she's on vacation this week but minors are listed on the Business Administration major website for brick and mortar UMPI students, I don't see why it couldn't be added for a YourPace student.

Yes, you can add a minor to the BABA degree. You can't add a BLS degree to a BABA degree - so no double major with those 2 degrees.

@joshua27, you're doing a BABA Supply Chain management concentration, if you want to add the MIS, there shouldn't be a problem.
@Tswede, depending on the BABA degree, you can add the MIS minor in each concentration except for Project Management.
Why you ask?  Well, the Project Management concentration is the shorter name for Project Management & Information Systems.

If you're looking for a quick degree and come back for a second; You can do a BLS and then a BABA, but not the other way around.

You actually have to graduate and wait for your degree to confer for the BLS before you can apply for the BABA so there will be a few months break between the 2 degree programs. been there. Done that.  Smile

This topic sort of got off course. No one ever replied whether I should look at doing the coursera certs or just take the classes at UMPI.

Recommendation: Take it at UMPI, you get graded credits and they're RA. Coursera is a great option if you're starting off with the subject, but these are alternative credits, I'd rather get the 'gold standard' instead of non graded alternative transfer credits.

IIRC, Programming for Managers is reportedly a bit difficult. Possibly more challenging than the certificate because some students have reported a lack of sufficient information in the course to be able to complete the final project. Getting the RA credit is nice, but if you're not already comfortable with programming, I'd just get the Coursera certificate, get the credit, and be able to focus your efforts elsewhere.

The Final Assessment has changed since I completed the course, but I still got through it. When I took it, the programming language used for the Final Assessment wasn't taught in the course content which was strange. I have ZERO programming experience so I struggled, but I figured it out and got an A in the course. The Coursera certificate isn't just 1 class if I remember correctly.
