Does anybody know if the SL, shmoop and study.com physics 101 courses are algebra- or calculus-based? I think someone wrote that Straighterline is heavy on calculus, but not sure about study.com and shmoop.

In the syllabus, SL mentions that it's calculus-based. The other 2 do not. I would recommend Study.com as a better choice if you want to try it out, I haven't heard much good about Shmoop at all. If people complain about the Lit courses, I can't imagine that a math or science course will be easy to follow and learn from.

If you're looking for physics for science majors, it usually needs to be calculus based with lab. For the rest of the world, algebra based is probably fine. I believe SL is the only one of the ACE options that is calculus based, though it is worth a quick email to the other providers to confirm. Once upon a time when I had to look into that question, it was before we even had Shoop - can't recall about Study... It may or may not be very important, not necessarily from the standpoint of difficulty, but from the standpoint of what will be required for a degree. Post back when you find out- I'm curious too.

Saylor has two Physics courses that would transfer into TESU as PHY 111 and 112. They are calculus based.

Thank you all so very much. And then, for our kids of school age, there is also AP. So many choices...I will report back.

I think the Uexcels are algebra-based.

Shmoop told me by email that their physics course is algebra-based.

Study.com just added Physics I & II to their ACE-approved courses, so you might want to check with them to see if those are any different than their Intro to Physics course.
