I am so excited to pass yet another CLEP exam!! This test was not easy to pass, so anyone looking to take this one, please get all the materials you can to study. I studied for about a month for this one using IC, REA, Petersons, and Wikipedia and still only got a 57. I am sure there are many different versions of the exam, but my version seemed to include a lot of "what is the LEAST true of...." so it takes some deductive reasoning. Read the questions thoroughly before answering. I finished in an hour. It seems to me that the key to not feeling quite so pressured for CLEP exams is to mark questions that require more thinking and/or reading and go on. At the end you can take more time to think the harder ones through. Onward now to Humanities--yikes...

I took the Humanities exam in February and scored a (64) after about 10 days of study.

I used IC and Wikipedia--both great resources for this exam. Know the paintings and the various styles of different artists and what they are famous for: ie: Wyeth's Christina's World, Renoir's darker Baroque style, and Van Gogh's post impressionist paintings like The Starry Night . This can be done in an Encyclopedia or other art book. Plus, review photos of different styles of architecture (Gothic, Greek, etc) such as differance between the Hagia Sophia and Notrem Dame Cathedral--one the epitome of Byzantine architecture and the other a famous structure of Gothic architecture. Know a flying buttress from a barrel vault (and what civilization was famous for them). I reveiwed many sources on this one to familiarize myself with the broad scope of the Humanities test. Main players, terms, etc. in all subjects and their works.

IC didn't cover everything in my exam version, however, it would have covered enough to get a simple pass. I would seriously recommend consulting a broad array of library resources! Best wishes of success! You can do it!

Thanks a bunch for the tips! I plan on using Comex, REA, IC, Peterson's, and the CLEP Study Guide. Hopefully that will be enough. I am already pretty familiar with works by Van Gogh, Monet, and Picasso. I am a true lover of art, so I think this will be an interesting study. Not sure about the poetry part though. It's nice to know that I could pass with only IC, and that will be my primary source. Since this is a 6 credit exam, I am giving myself 2 months to study (1 month per 3 credits is my rule of thumb) and plan on taking it in May. I need 24 more CLEP credits, so my next 4 exams will all be 6 credits each, which is pretty scary. Passing these first two gives me more confidence than if I had started out with Humanities or Biology. Thanks again. You got a great score! Only 10 days of study???? Wow, that is very impressive and encouraging!

Take your time and work at the pace that fits your learning style. The reason I studied for it in 10 days, is because of my learning style. If I take 3-4 weeks to study one subject, I get restless and will find something else to occupy my time until 1-2 weeks before the scheduled exam date. I have found that I work best under pressure and during short study times. You just have to find your "sweet spot" as they say; this credit-by-examination is a whole new ball game to what most people are used to.

Make sure you are familiar with a broad base of players in art, architecture, poetry, music, drama, etc. Each test will vary slightly. I had some questions like this hypothetical:

Which of the following is a group of musicians:

A. W.B. Yeats, Emily Dickinson, John Smith, Harry Shortlegs

B. James Brown, Robert Jones, Salvador Dali, Henry Johnson

C. Frank Lloyd Wright, Ben Johnson, Ivan Smith, Oswald Puccino

D. Larry Corbett, Frank Harford, Mary Lewallen, Harry Terry

You must use POE, or process of elimination on some of these. I was rusty with music and poetry, but it seemed as though they threw in some "nobodys" on these questions--often I would not recognize anyone in the answer. However, I know Dickinson (A) is a poet, Dali (B) is an artist, and Wright © is an architect. D would be the answer choice (Although for our purpose here, the names in choice "D" are made-up).

My recommendations:

1. Make sure you know the IC cards inside and out

2. Study some poetry concepts (ie foot, meter, etc./abbabba) from any encyclopedia

3. Know musical terms.

4. Be able to distinguish different art styles, famous works, etc. (Medival sculpture from African, classical from art deco, a Jacques-Louis David from Michelangelo and Van Gogh)

It is hard to zone in on one thing. This is a broad test. See where College Board says where the concentration areas are, evaluate your knowledge, and study accordingly. Godspeed!
