Precalculus CLEP? + Calculator?
#1
I'm taking the Precalculus CLEP on 8/20/09...

***Does anyone know, can you bring and use your own TI graphing calculator? (I have a TI-83, I think)***
Can you bring/use any of your own calculator, or must you use the one provided on the computer?

Also, does anyone have any good study material? Is ALEKS worth the $20 if I'm only going to use it for two weeks or so?

I'm totally fried and so far I can't answer any of the REA questions... but I took and scored well on a whole year's worth of Pre-Cal (in highschool)! Help...

From the collegeboard website:

Quote: * ection 1: 25 questions, 50 minutes. The use of an online graphing calculator (non-CAS) is allowed for this section. Only some of the questions will require the use of the calculator.
* Section 2: 23 questions, 40 minutes. No calculator is allowed for this section.

Although most of the questions on the exam are multiple-choice, there are some questions that require you to enter a numerical answer.
Online Graphing Calculator

A graphing calculator is integrated into the exam software, and it is available to students during Section 1 of the exam. Since only some of the questions in Section 1 actually require the calculator, students are expected to know how and when to make appropriate use of it. The graphing calculator, together with a brief tutorial, is available to students as a free download for a 30-day trial period. Students are expected to download the calculator and become familiar with its functionality prior to taking the exam.

It appears that you'd best become familiar with the college board's calculator sometime in the next 2 weeks.Wink

I've played around with the provided calculator, it's just that I don't like it and think it will slow me down considerably, so I'm wondering if it's allowed to bring my own.
But... I can't find anywhere where it says that it's against or within the rules to bring your own calculator. :'|

If you can't find the answer about the calculator issue, I would try to call someone at The College Board. You can find their support phone number on their website.

Also, even if you are only going to use ALEKS for a couple of weeks, it is definitely worth more than the $20 you'll spend (that's the way it was for me, at least!). Wink

I took the Precalc test back in January. I was not allowed to have my own calculator - but I found the one that College Board provides to be fine and dandy. I know that isn't really a fun calculator to use (I have a TI-83 and it's SO much better), but in reality, you don't need the calculator a whole lot for this test. You only get it for half of the test, and I believe it's possible to do all the problems without the calculator anyways. I wouldn't worry about it. Smile

I used ALEKS for my test, and while the information was above and beyond what you really need for the CLEP, it was well worth the $20. It explains everything so well - and doesn't allow you to move on until you have mastered the section you are currently on.

If you can get your hands on a copy of Precalculus Demystified, I found that was the best resource. The explanations were great, and what they taught was according to the test.

Good luck on this one! It can be kind of daunting when you're studying for it, but I didn't find the real thing to be all that difficult.

Agreed. If you brought your own calculator, it would be the college or testing center's responsibility to police it or not. Perhaps they don't care if you use your own calculator or not.
