Quick question regarding TESC ASBA degree plan...
#1
Hey all, long-time lurker/first-time poster and all that. I recently got my first academic evaluation back from TESC with my transfer/AP credits applied. I'm in the process of trying to outline which CLEP/TECEPs I need to take to fulfill the rest of my requirements for the ASBA program, but one particular part of the evaluation has me a bit confused:

N) 2: Core (18sh)
Credits: 0
Complete all 5 subrequirements:
N) A: Intr Finl/Mgrl Acctg
> Complete one full year of Introductory/Principles of
> Accounting (Principles of Financial Accounting and
> Principles of Managerial Accounting)
Credits: 0
N) Group 1
ACC-101 Prin. of Finl Acctg__________________________ 1 course needed
ACC-102 Prin. of Mgrl Acctg__________________________ 1 course needed
N) Group 2
ACC-181 Intro. to Financial Acctg I__________________ 1 course needed
ACC-182 Intro. to Financial Acctg I__________________ 1 course needed
ACC-183 Intro. to Managerial Acctg___________________ 1 course needed

The way that section is worded, I'm interpreting it to mean I must complete one of the two groups (e.g. either I complete ACC-101 and ACC-102, OR I complete ACC-181, ACC182, and ACC183). Could any of you let me know if I'm reading it right or if I'm way off? Thanks Smile

edit: here is the full academic evaluation for the ASBA program (full disclosure -- I originally applied under the BA in Communications, not sure why I did that, but this evaluation was generated with the "what-if" option, as I'm particularly interested in an ASBA at this time.)

Exam credits that were transferred: AP Calculus, AP English Composition, AP English Literature
(both of the English tests appear as "duplicated" on the evaluation, because I had originally gotten credit for those at my local CC -- I had the scores sent directly by the College Board as well.)
CC credits that were transferred: Intro to Psychology, Intro to Shakespeare (appears to have been credited as a Gen Ed elective), Intro to Telecommunications

You only need fill group 1 - ACC-101 and ACC-102.

I just noticed that ACC-181-ACC183 is most likely transferred in from another institution (or quite possibly a certification). See the evaluation posted on this thread. Under free electives.

Is your concentration in Accounting? You're evaluation is good for six months, so get Clepping! Smile I'm sure someone will be able to clarify the difference between the 101 and the 181 courses as I'm thinking they are probably all lower lever courses. Make sure you post here the evaluated AP credits so that you don't duplicate them by taking CLEP.
Don't forget that gaining college credit by taking exams is one of the reason's we're here. That's mainly possible through the flashcards made available by the owner of this forum : InstantCert Plus of course your hard work in learning and reviewing

I recently posted a plan for this degree. After reviewing what you've already taken, I tweaked it a bit to highlight what I think would be the best choices for you.

Good luck!

Wow, thank you so much! This is seriously a huge help. I was trying to put something like this together myself but was just getitng so lost. One more quick question: do you think I could potentially substitute the Marketing Communications TECEP under Intellectual and Practical Skills? I'm hesitant to mess with your TECEP recommendations too much for fear of not meeting the residency requirements, but I hope substituting one TECEP for another shouldn't be an issue.

You are welcome! Happy to help!

Sure, Marketing Communications fits the grouping. You can choose any combination of 4 TECEPs/courses you want as long as they fill that needed requirement. I just thought since you are at the calculus level, you would not need to study for a gen math test. The exam would be very, very easy for you; it's high school math. Take a look at the test description. You could also swap out the business elective, COM210 Public Relations for Marketing Communications.

Take a look at the TECEP list, you have quite a few choices!

Oh, you think the exam for that particular math TECEP would really be that easy? lol, I might as well do that then and just get it out of the way! Big Grin

edit: Wow, I just took a look at that test description -- that would be no sweat! I've got half a mind to sign up for it right this second, lol. Do I need to get my degree program officially switched to the ASBA first, though (since it's still technically a BA in Communications at the moment)? I imagine I'd need to contact the Registrar for that.

Yeah, had a feeling you would get excited once you read some of those questions. LOL. I took the actual course, it was an easy A. ;-)

Instead of taking DSST Intro to Business, take the Marketing Communications exam. It will apply to both the ASBA and the BA Communications AOS (2 birds one stone). You will also acquire 15/24 residency credits towards your BA.

Yes, call or email the Registrar; you don't need to change degrees, just ask them to activate the ASBA. The rule is you are allowed to enroll in both an Associate and Bachelor program at the same time. It's actually best because you will be completing residency requirements for both degrees at the same time. You then decide if you want to graduate with the ASBA first; or, wait until you've also completed the Bachelor's degree and graduate with both on the same conferral date for one grad fee.

Now I also understand your interest in COM courses. A few exams/courses I know will fit the area of study and/or human cultures, gen ed (and more important have received positive feedback):

TESC Managerial Communications (MAN-373); TECEP Marketing Communications (MAR-321); Saylor Corporate Communications (COM-373), TESC Elements of Intercultural Communication (COM-335), TESC Interpersonal Communication (COM-330), SL Business Communications (COM-300), TECEP Public Relations (COM-210), SL Intro to Communications (COM-108); Penn Foster Business & Technical Writing (ENG-216), TECEP or DSST Technical Writing (ENG-201); TECEP Introduction to News Reporting (JOU-110).

Unsure of the difficulty level of the following: Alt. ECE Interpersonal Communication (COM-330), DSST Public Speaking (COM-209) refreshed 2014.

bricabrac, you're a godsend! Big Grin This is awesome, I've read some stories of others on this forum who had completed both an Associate and Bachelor's at the same time, and wasn't sure if it would be possible for my situation or not. It sounds like you recommend taking that route (both degrees at once) rather than getting the ASBA first; I'll definitely have to weigh whether or not getting the Associate's now is more important to me than saving money on the grad fee by doing both on the same date.
