questioning feasibility of finishing a math degree at TESC or Charter Oak
#1
Like many of you, I'm looking to finish my degree. I have 115 credit hours of coursework from various accredited, 'brick and mortar' schools. This includes significant upper division course work in Math, Physics, and CS. I've tried the 'traditional school' route. I have too many upper division courses from too many differing schools to transfer into a 'traditional' institution. I've found several online math degree programs from various other schools (like UIS.edu). Unfortunately, you have to complete X many credit hours from UIS to get a UIS degree.

I obviously won't be taking any math courses through Charter Oak or TESC. However, I'd like to take courses from other accredited distance learning programs and transfer them in, so I can finish my degree.

Given everyone's experience, how feasible is this? Am I asking for trouble. I've emailed the respective colleges and I will obviously follow up with them. My concern is how much of a hassle am I going to have? I'm looking at these schools because I need to finish a undergraduate degree as soon as possible, by any means possible. Will the school take credits in Real Analysis or Algorithms? How badly will they butcher my transcripts?

Additonally, I found TESC and Charter Oak interesting because I could choose classes 'a la carte'. I'd like to take classes that would make me more competitive for a graduate program. This would include a course in Probability from U of I and a course in Mathematical Statistics from another school.

Does anyone have any experience finishing a degree in Mathematics or the Sciences from either TESC, Charter Oak, or Excelsior?

I appreciate any feedback you can give.

Here are Excelsior's requirements for the Mathematics major...

Core Requirements
A: Calculus sequence - a series of three 1-semester courses, which may include a study of analytic geometry
B: Differential Equations
C: Linear Algebra

Intermediate/Upper Level Courses
(you must take two 3-credit courses from Group A, two 3-credit courses from Group B, and one 3-credit from each of the two subgroups of Group C)
A. Analysis: courses such as Advanced Calculus; Real Analysis; Vector Analysis; Complex Analysis
B. Algebra: courses such as Abstract or Modern Algebra; Number Theory; Algebraic Structures
C. Applied Mathematics:
1. Subgroup 1: courses such as Combinatories; Discrete Mathematics; Decision Theory; Graph Theory
2. Subgroup 2: courses such as Computer Methods or Numerical Analysis; Linear Programming; Mathematical Modeling; Multiple Regression Analysis; Statistics (must be calculus-based)

Mathematics courses below the level of introductory calculus may be used as general electives, but will not count towards the major. You would complete the degree requirements entirely a la carte, from whatever regionally-accredited sources you prefer. Note: Mathematics is the only major at Excelsior which is currently exempt from the Research & Writing In The Major Requirement.

There is one disadvantage to cherry-picking your courses from different colleges - you'll need to send a transcript from each one to each grad program to which you apply. That could get expensive!

Hi Paradox!

I am planning to pursue a math major at Excelsior College through the Math GRE.

I am curious; after looking at the requirements that Perrik posted, how close are you to completing a math major at EC already?

Are your math skills fresh? Would there be any benefit to you to taking the Math GRE and trying to get 85th percentile for the full 33 credits?

If you decide to take online courses to finish the requirements, I would be interested in knowing more about those.
