Sorry, I didn't see the post times.
I was just trying to clarify in case someone newer looks at the post, and only sees the last one. When someone doesn't see the question you're answering, it may get somewhat confusing.

You are not alone, everyone comes across a course or format that just doesn't work for them. Seriously, every time I looked at the SL mico/macro econ material I thought "WTH this will take forever" while others just plowed past it.

I feel the same way- only with Straighterline. I may not renew. That'll be 500+ dollars down the drain, but it's not worth my peace of mind. I'll have to CLEP out of these courses, but, it's so -- almost abusive-- to understand the subject and yet sit there thinking "How do THEY want me to answer?" The final straw for me was spending seven minutes on a question because I didn't see the correct answer. Turns out, the horrible textbook had two definitions for the same term, one in the text and one in the margins. They wanted the one in the margin; most likely to thwart people who sign up just the take openbook quizzes and purposely flunk the final.
This is not learning.

I've noticed the difference between Shmoop and Study courses is that Shmoop is looking for how history affected things and people whereas Study is more like a Cliffs notes version of courses... a condensed, just the facts type course.
My son aced Study courses but has been struggling with Shmoop.
Although the Shmoop courses have really helped him learn test taking strategies so we have considered the month successful even though he only finished one course... still less expensive than a CLEP!

Heck, I remember reading a question on Harry Potter and getting it wrong and I've read those books more times that I want to admit. Their tests stink. I have taught on some of those books and had trouble with the tests. They want them to be cheat proof but it undermines the entire learning process. I cancelled my membership early.
How do know you got the Harry Potter question wrong? Do you mean in the practice quiz (activity)? I really want to see what I got wrong in my unit tests, so I can be better prepared for the final, but I'm not seeing a way. I don't know how I can learn the parts I'm worst at, without some feedback. I thought I was going to score at least 75% but ended up with a 50% on a unit test Since I thought I got them right, I don't know how I could proceed.
Shmoop is also misleading because of the quizzes (activities) on the subsections having questions that are completely different. At least for the Lit courses. Same with the flashcards and terms. I really feel that the questions need someone to really analyze, beyond what Shmoop's own analysis section does, and it seems like advanced Lit, not lower level Lit to me. (I am doing a course with lower level credit.)
I did manage 2 history courses. Even those had too much analysis, but I guess I passed due to it being more factual. Geometry was fairly easy. Those questions can't be subjective

I took a literature course from Schmoop because it sounded interesting. I'm terrible with literature and barely passed. I had almost given up after failing a unit exam but decided to continue on. I found that some of the questions were on material that hadn't even been covered in the course. I like the format of the courses and course material but I do not like the tests.

There's only two courses that's offered by Schmoop that's not offered by ALEKS.
I would only recommend taking the Finite Math and Geometry, if you really need them.
Otherwise, it's cheaper/easier/faster to take the courses from ALEKS
