Straighterline ? for long term
#1
I’ve searched the boards and can not find the answer to this question.

My 16 yr. old son is accumulating credits, we have not narrowed down a specific college that he will enter for graduation since in all likelihood it will be 2 to 3 years down the road.

My question concerns taking courses at Straighterline. What is he to do with the courses once completed? Does he have to decide right then to have courses listed on an ACE transcript or sent straight to a college? I know that he would rather have a grade instead of pass/fail. Can you list courses on ACE and then later decide that you would rather have Straighterline send course credit to a college instead, so that he might get a grade not P/F?

I hope this question makes sense. I’ve read about so many changes in the last year concerning TESC, EC, Straighterline, FHSU, GREs that my head is becoming foggy in trying to make long term goals/mapping out plans for my kiddos. Maybe I’m totally over-analyzing and there is a simple answer.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi momtomany,

I had similar questions which Mr Hoon was kind enough to reply to. An extract from his reply is below:

--------------------------------------
Yes, you can transfer the credits to any of our partners that accept them, even if you have already sent them to ACE.

Yes, you can send some courses to ACE and some to a partner school. It is up to you where you want us to send the credits.

Yes, you can take multiple courses under the same $99 program. They do not have to be completed sequentially.
--------------------------------------

Finally, be aware that some partner colleges will only apply a Pass/Fail grade for courses. In particular, Excelsior College. See here for all the details. However, according to this post from our forum, Fort Hays no longer transcripts letter grades.

Hope this helps!

Momtomany and Irnbru,
As always great to see Andrew helping you all out. Here is a chart which does get updated regularly with our new partner colleges and which ones will issue letter grades (more are starting to give grades).

Hey Straighterline Team, I have a question for you:

If I decide to use Jefferson Community and Technical College as partner for my classes, does it mean that they will transcript the SL classes as their own, like FHSU and then I could tranfer them anywhere I wanted to?

second question: Excelsior college charges $75 application fee however in the link you gave us it says application fee $0. Is that a typo or if I take my classes to Excelsior I get an application fee waiver?

Thanks

Perico,
I believe JCTC will transcript the classes and you can go to any KY school (we have a list on our site) but you might want to check with them about how the process will work if you transfer to schools outside of KY.

Regarding Excelsior I did a little research and it seems they do charge an application fee. If at some point they waive it for our students we will let you know.
Hope this helps.

Dear Straighterline team. I called Jefferson (and after a long wait) I talked to 2 persons and they were not aware of the existance of Straighterline.

I would really appreciate if you guys could check and confirm how Jefferson treats SL classes?

We are really pleased to have FHSU unfortunately they are not taking all the classes and we would be very excited if you found partners like FHSU for the other classes.

If VESI can sure you can!

Best wishes

perriquit,

We have someone looking into this with JCTC. They are also going to have the admissions and the registrar updated on the relationship (they should know but will remind them).

We will update you when we have more detailed information.
