I asked about this too, got the same response. Also, the ACE recommendation is for 6sh.
Not to hijack the thread, but: I looked at the study.com course, and I'm a little surprised by it being double what SL is worth (seems more like it should be 4sh like the CLEP and Saylor). Good news for people with credit gaps, though!

Welcome to the forum! UL means upper-level. It is like learning a new language, so this thread will help you with the other abbreviations that are used here:

dfrecore Wrote:I think Study.com originally started as a way to study for the CLEP, DSST and UExcel exams, and then branched into actually giving credit for the courses they were teaching. Every single course they have is a duplicate of either a CLEP, DSST or UExcel course.
There are a few changes in terms of number of credits given and whether or not it's given UL:
Intro to Humanities - CLEP is HUM-101/102 (6cr), study.com is HUM-101 (3cr)
Natural Sciences - CLEP is NAS-101/102 (6cr), study.com is Introductory Physics PHY-104 (3cr)
Intro to Biology - CLEP is BIO-111/112 (6cr), study.com is BIO-101 (3cr)
Intro to Chemistry - CLEP is CHE-111/112 (6cr), study.com is CHE-104 (3cr)
College Math - CLEP is MAT-102/103 (6cr), study.com is MAT-102 (3cr)
Calculus - CLEP is MAT-231 (3cr), study.com is MAT-231 (6cr) - there may be an error on the table
Psych of Adulthood & Aging - UExcel is PSY-319 (UL), study.com's is called Developmental Psych II PSY-212
Intro to World Religions DSST is REL-405 (UL), study.com's is REL-277
So I would be very careful not to duplicate credit between CLEP/DSST/UExcel and study.com, and also be careful in deciding which ones to take for UL or 6cr courses.
I can't remember the original name, but Study.com used to be a free website with videos that were designed to prepare people for CBEs. They even used to offer a $1,000 scholarship for CLEP/DSST. After they started charging, I lost all interest. I'd rather take the equivalent tests.
dfrecore Wrote:For whatever reason, no matter where you take Marketing and Management, they come in as UL at TESU. Except of course if it's at a CC. Kooky. I don't think SL is better than CC, but apparently TESU does!
BUT, maybe it's because it just doesn't matter to TESU. Since there is no requirement that those courses be UL, and only 4 electives must be UL in the BSBA, it doesn't matter what course number they give them. They also don't count in other degree plans except in Free Electives, so it doesn't matter to those degree plans either, since all of your UL requirements are in your Area of Study.
TESU does this for almost every course. If it is offered as an upper level course/test/e-Pack or has been evaluated as UL in their PLA database, then the transfer course will always be UL unless it comes from a 2-year college. Using weird TESU logic, they are probably thinking that courses from 2-year colleges should never be awarded UL credit since 2-year colleges never offer UL credits. They used to give UL credit for CC courses, but there might have been an issue with their accreditor. You never know.

For me (and others I know), getting to SDSU to take a CLEP/DSST is a major hassle - it's 40 minutes away with no traffic, parking is quite far from the testing center, and it costs money to park. That's not to mention their funky scheduling; they only offer CLEP's daily at 10am and 2pm, and DSST's at 11am and 3pm or something like that. You can't schedule 2 exams, and you have to find a day where they have an opening, because they only have ONE computer available for CLEP/DSST exams in a giant room filled with about 100 computers! If you want to take more exams, you have to finish the first one and go out to the desk to talk to the person running the center, and ask, and they will only let you take one if there is enough time (which they won't tell you ahead of time is the rule, and won't tell you what amount of time that is). The whole thing is just ridiculous. Add to it the whole having to pay for a CLEP ahead of time online, so you couldn't opt to just take an exam on the spot if you wanted to because there was extra time, and I just gave up. I'd rather pay extra and be able to test from home than go through that rigamarole.
I also pictured having 2 high schoolers studying for a CLEP exam together, and wanting to take the test on the same day but not being able to do so; we'd either have to book their exams 4 hours apart and then do WHAT exactly while waiting for the other kid to take the exam; or take them on separate days, and make the drive twice. Ugh, sounds like torture. No thank you.
I'm in San Diego no less. Oh and yes, there are several other testing centers, but most are on base, and the ones that aren't have even worse times available for testing than SDSU, if you can believe it.
But I'm sure other people have much better testing options than I do, so if that's the case, test away!

If I weren't close to a CLEP/DSST testing center, I'd rather take a Uexcel or TECEP. I would even pay more for a CSU Global CBE or suffer through an SL course because watching those boring videos would cause even more suffering. hilarious I know many people enjoy their videos; I think they're painfully boring. If all video courses were like the Annenberg series, I would enjoy them.

I also just ran into an old link for SpeedPrep.com I would call it a direct competitor to Instancert, but CLEPS only. Does anyone know what would make it different from Instantcert?

I do happen to know!! I signed up for SpeedyPrep a couple of months back, to study for Microeconomics. I hate the flashcard system (I know many of you love it and that's great). But my brain just doesn't work that way - I have to actually go through and learn the material - for the life of me cannot memorize the info on a flashcard with no context. For me flashcards only work as a study tool AFTER I learn, but before I test.
Anyway, they have videos in addition to flashcards (the intro screen says "Learning Network" powered by CollegePlus"). When you open the list of courses, you can choose either the course which takes you to the flashcards, or "videos." I haven't watched much yet, so can't give info on it.

I don't know about SpeedyPrep, but there is context on the IC flashcards.
