TESC BA in English Degree Plan, with Questions!
#1
Hey all! I recently decided to switch my degree plan from a BS in Computer Information Systems to a BA in English. Here is the credit distribution from TESC: Thomas Edison State College | BA in English Credit Distribution. I'll attach my current degree plan.
Does anyone know of any tests that will help fulfill my English Electives? I'm checking to see if there are any TECEPs.

Also, it appears I will need at least 18 301-401 classes, and I'm only allowed 1 or 2 101 classes.

Thanks for your help!

Looks like you will find plenty of them here: Courses A-L.

I am just 2 cleps short of wrapping up an english degree from tesc, so I will tell you what I know.

Take Interpreting and Analyzing Literature CLEP, Eng. Lit. CLEP, and American Lit. CLEP. These will all go towards your major. They will take care of Survey of Lit and Analysis requirements. Also, take the technical writing dsst. That will take care of 21 out of 33 credits. You can try to find classes online; I had a great experience at San Juan College online courses. Check them out; they are very, very cheap. Just make sure you are taking 200-level + classes. If you need to save, you can do LSU correspondence courses, though they are a ton of work and take a long time. Also try looking at local community colleges. There are probably a few other cheap online schools that you can find courses in; try searching these forums.

The most difficult thing to find is the non-western lit. If you have to, you can do the African Encounters from Tesc, it's really not too bad at all.

I am assuming that their policies have not changed since I started with my degree plan. You may want to confirm all of this. Good luck!

Hey, thanks to you both! I wasn't having any luck searching, all I came up with was English Comp w/ Essay, which I've already done ^_^

Awesome, I'll refer to your plan @doghouse42, it looks pretty sound. Trying to get this degree finished as quickly as is possible! I'm actually listening to an LSU humanities class right now... Not too helpful since I'm taking that particular CLEP tomorrow morning, but every little bit helps!

Alright, now that I've got a little to go on, I'll work with this, and probably post back to let the folks here know what works and what doesn't =)

Sounds like you are not subject to the 18 credit minimum for 300 level and above, but since the OP is, San Juan College's courses are probably not an option if the OP uses CLEP and DSST exams.

CLEP exams:

American Literature 6 credits 100 level
English Literature 6 credits 200 level
Analyzing and Interpreting Literature 6 credits 200 level

DSST

Technical Writing 3 credits 200 level

Maybe it's not necessary to take all of the aforementioned CLEPs and DSSTs since the OP would still need 18 credits at 300 level and above UNLESS extra credits are needed to fulfill the Gen Ed Humanities requirement or for free or Gen Ed electives.

Unless you want to apply the extra exam credits as described above, I'd suggest using the Analyzing and Interpreting Literature CLEP to meet that requirement in the Area of Study and the extra 3 credits can probably be used to meet elective requirements in the Area of Study. Then, maybe take either the American or English Literature CLEP (either presumably meets the Survey of Literature I and II requirement) and Technical Writing because that would allow you to max out your 15 credits at 200 level and below in the Area of Study.

The Ohio University Credit by Exam options I linked to above may not be enough for you to hit 18 credits, including the non-Western literature requirement, but I would think that they would be less time-consuming than the LSU courses since all you do is take the final.

EDIT: Looks like the OP could get 16 semester credits from Ohio U if the OP took the English Literature CLEP and then took the 3 300 level Ohio U exams in American Literature and the 3 300 level exams in Shakespeare, which by my reckoning would leave just the non-Western literature requirement to be met.

Are you certain that you need that many 300 level credits? When did that change?

I'll second African Encounters; it's a paper-writing fiesta, but upper-level and a cool course.

Here it is: Thomas Edison State College | BA in English Credit Distribution. I don't know when the change was instituted, but if you matriculated before it came into effect, you are grandfathered in to the old requirements.

I am thinking about English as a second Area of Study and the decision might hang on whether or not I can apply three upper level German literature courses I have already taken to the Area of Study. One course was in English and the other two were in German (all have a GERM prefix), so while I am pretty sure the one in English would be OK, I don't know about the ones that were in German. Any thoughts on this?
