I did the initial assessment of probability and it took forever because I just did a brush up for a few hours before the assessment.
Now that I invested all that time I am given this notice:
This is your ALEKS pie.
It shows that you know 42 of 116 topics in this class.
Did that assessment get me any closer to being done? I have heard you need to do 70% or so mastery on assessments to finish.

The pie and assessments are distinct entities but feed in to each other in various ways.
The pie represents which topics you have demonstrated the ability to consistently answer specific types of questions on. Each topic has exercises which must be correctly answered several times in order for that topic to be completed. It then gets ticked off the whole pie.
The assessment uses the same format every time, essentially starting from zero. If you answer a question correctly, you will then be presented with a question of approximately equal or greater difficulty from the same or different 'slice' of the representative pie. A good rule of thumb for judging your performance as you work through the assessment is if you find you are presented with new or unfamiliar topics. This is true whether it is your first (initial) assessment or twentieth
If you answer questions incorrectly, the topic to which a particular questions relates is removed from your pie.
In order to gain credit, you must achieve a score of 70% or greater in an assessment (not just the pie). As an assessment is never 116 questions, not all topics will be included but you are expected to be able to demonstrate the ability to answer questions representative of 70%ish of the total syllabus, if that makes sense. Solving harder problems will effectively gain you more ground due to the presumed cumulative nature of maths/stats.
Hope that makes some sense and good luck!

Thanks for the info.
I just went to the report link and I see a blue bar labeled
Initial Assessment 12/05/2010 36 +4 %
Which the +4 is the learning I did today and the 36 is presumably what I passed in my initial assessment.
So that means that I am half way there?
I'm going to fill out the probability pie piece and find a way to trigger an assessment on that piece.
iclep2 - make sure you make printouts of your problem descriptions. I am choosing to print to microsoft xps document writer and putting those descriptions in a folder with files named "prob_binomial.xps" and "prob_dependent.xps" so that when I do an assessment if I forget I can go back and read those notes.
I found some calculators online that can help validate things.

If you don't know a subject just hit explain and print out the explanation. then use that to help you solve the next problems.
I found trying to rush through statistics did not work for me. I needed to just take my time and really learn it then I did better on the assesssment.
You can trigger assessments by going to the master account and requesting one, but assessments are only given for the whole course not just one piece. If you just want to test your learning of that area you can request a quiz.
I also suggest that you do not take breaks from Statistics I TOOK 2 1-2 week breaks and it was twice as hard when I went back.
What finally got me through was slow, but steady progress through the pie I think I had something like 80 pieces of pie and had assesesed at 65% then learned 7 % more when I was finally able to assess at 70% exactly. But who care I have Principals of Statistics on my transcript and it just says pass.

I got 80% on initial assessment. After the assessment it takes me to my pie. What do I have to do to get the credit since I scored more than 70% on initial assessment ?

ACE Credit Courses
Instructions to Receive ACE Credit for an ACE Credit-Recommended ALEKS Course:
- Register in an ALEKS ACE credit-recommended course and assess at 70% or greater on the course material.
- Register with the ACE Credit Online Transcript System and submit a transcript request.
- ALEKS Corporation will receive the transcript request and verify if you have assessed at 70% or greater on the course material. This usually takes ALEKS Corporation approximately three business days.
- If you have assessed at 70% or greater, you will receive an email from ACE when processing is complete. This usually takes approximately 1-3 business days for ACE to complete.
- If your request is denied, you can continue to work in your ALEKS Pie until you have assessed at 70% or greater on the course material, and then resubmit a transcript request following the steps above.
- The ACE transcript can be used to request college credit at educational institutions that grant credit for ACE credit-recommended courses.

I am currently at 58% on this course. I initially assessed at 30%.
The best advice I can give you on this is to print off the explanations for problems that have complex algorithms that you have trouble remembering. Also, DO IT EVERY SINGLE DAY. I cannot press this enough. If you spend at least an hour every day on it it will make it so much easier for you. If you take days off you will amaze yourself with how much you can forget.
There is no speeding through ALEK's. I just did Pre-cal and it took me almost 5 months to get through it. The key is constant steady work.
Work a section at a time. They build on themselves and if you focus on one section you'll find it easier to shift gears on the topics within that section.
Good Luck!
