What have you done with your Big 3 Degree?

I'm often humbled when Jennifer posts behind me....like in this thread.

Well said, in depth, and completely accurate response Jennifer.
MBA, Western Governors University February 2014
BS Charter Oak State College November 2011
AS in EMS August 2010

I'm always happy to complete the free application waiver for those applying to WGU (I get a free gift from WGU for this).  Just PM me your first/last name and a valid email so I can complete their form.

Indeed. The reason I am pursuing this degree is to keep an open door for the future.
Finished: BA Liberal Studies TESU 2016

a completely unnecessary compliment, especially since I clearly can't figure out how to turn off the bold feature Wink

I was able to get into a good MBA program (not elite) with it. I work in government so they don't really care where the degree is from, but I frequently receive offers from HR managers for positions. I'm tempted sometimes to do it to make a career change, but I don't want to lose the money or the govt bennies. If you have good work experience, a Big 3 degree WILL enhance your resume.

Don't waste time by trying to save time. The only sure way to complete your degree is to knock out credits quickly and efficiently.

Don't let easiness bite you in the rear. Know your endgame (where you want to be) and plan backward from there. Your education is a means to an end.

Be honest professionally, socially and academically. There are people (especially little ones) who look up to you and they're going by your example.

Be proud. Whether you're an Engineer or Fast Food worker, there is honor and dignity in hard work.

Picking on people weaker than you only proves that you are a weak person.

:iagree: Such a great way to put it Jennifer.

I just recently (in the last week) got a job offer with the organization I've wanted to be a part of for the last 5 years. I even chose the cybersecurity major at COSC back in 2014 on the basis I hoped it would make me more competitive to get in at this organization.

I don't even have my degree yet, but seeing that I am in the process of finishing my last courses to graduate in May or August they offered the job anyway.

sanantone Wrote:The Big 3 are regionally accredited, non-profit schools. TESU and COSC are state schools. In that respect, they don't differ from any other unranked, non-profit school. They all offer dozens of courses, and most of their students do not test out of a large number of credits. What you have to worry about when testing out is having enough graded credits for certain graduate programs and health professions programs may not accept prerequisites that were completed by CLEP/DSST/challenge exam.

Testing out of a degree is quicker and easier, but I'm not sure I would call it easy. You still have to study, and people do fail tests. Poor test takers will have to rely on self-paced courses such as Straighterline, Sophia, Study.com, and ACE-approved courses from Penn Foster College.

If you're not going to attend a prestigious school, then all that matters is accreditation and avoiding schools with bad reputations (almost all of them are large for-profits). The Big 3 are mostly unknown to the general public.

BA in Social Science, Thomas Edison State College
I was able to register as a licensed chemical dependency counselor intern. I now work as a substance abuse counselor and am earning hours toward my license.
I got into an online master's program at a state university. After finishing my master's degree, I moved on to a traditional PhD program at a state university. I'm in the process of taking my last elective. Once I defend my dissertation proposal, I will be admitted to candidacy and considered ABD.
I thought I remember you saying you were going to the Police Academy?

I was working in corrections and waiting to go to the police academy. Once I found out that most of the people graduating from the academy were stuck in the jail for years afterward, I decided to apply to a substance abuse counseling opening that accepts interns. I had been looking for an internship for years, and my registration is going to expire next year. I'm still going to have to ask for an extension unless I graduate with my PhD beforehand. That'll let me waive the internship requirements, but it's still important to have the experience before I'm fully licensed.

Thank you everyone for your posts. One of my friends has pulled the trigger and has applied to all three schools to see how his JTS will effect his degree plan. I hope he will join here and learn / contribute to the community.

You are all great! Smile

I completed my degree in 2012 when TESU was TESC. With that I was able to apply for and receive a commission in the Navy while I was enlisted. I was afforded the opportunity to attend Flight training, Surface Warfare Officer, and now in Aerospace Maintenance. The Navy in no way looked down on my accredited degree in any of those fields. I was also accepted into a Masters program at SNHU shortly after receiving my undergrad. Take a look at the previous post by Jen, determine how your degree from whatever institution you plan to attend aligns to where you want to be. Don't underestimate your work experience either when put that in conjunction with your degree.
