You can take all the lesson quizes and practice exams but you cannot take the exam for credit! I did the free trial a little over a month ago. Still good to do the trial and get a feel for the site before you commit $200.
Oh, also, all the work you do while on your free trial is saved when you start with a regular plan. That was helpful to me in Physical Geology. Without that extra week I wouldn't have been able to get two exams in the first month. If you are completely confident in the subject you might want to just take a dsst or clep. Study.com takes a while to get through. You must take all the lesson quizzes with an 80 or better. Most classes have 100-200 quizzes. Then you must have a webcam and download the proctor software. Just taking the tests in a testing center is going to save you half a day of quiz taking alone.
