I had some AP credits from when I was in high school back in the 90's.
At the first university that I attended, a certain score on the AP test didn't garner any English credit, but it did allow you to get placed in an "accelerated" English class so you only had to take 3 hours of Freshman Comp instead of 6.
So -- I suppose this will vary from school to school. Whatever you do, don't duplicate subject matter between CLEP and AP (or any tests, for that matter). The AP exams were a LOT harder than the CLEP/DANTES that I took, in my opinion.
