FEMA & FREE College Credit courses
Thanks Southpaw and et4tango, most appreciated.

mtmathai - I think it's mostly on an individual basis depending on the school. You'd probably need to call your advisor and find out what they say. Just let them know that some of these have been looked at by ACE and assigned credits. As for the other part of your question, run a search for FEMA in the forums and read those posts. They have a couple of threads where it's been broken down into what applies and how.

I understand the FEMA piece of this...what does the FCC piece mean? Are they separate credits?

The FEMA credits in and of themself are not worth anything (you can't apply them towards a degree in their raw form). However, Frederick Community College will, for a fee, take those otherwise useless FEMA credits and put them on their own transcript. By doing this, they validate the credits as if you took the courses at FCC. Additionally, because FCC is regionally accredited, those FEMA credits can then be applied towards a regionally accredited degree elsewhere.

The reason everyone mentions FCC in particular is that it is one of the only regionally accredited schools that is willing to fulfill this necessary transcripting process for the FEMA credits.

Hope that helps,

Just an FYI - looks like EC finally made an official ruling on the FEMA via TESC credit bank, and the news is not good:
Thank you for your correspondence. We currently accept FEMA Independent Study course credits from Clackamus Community College (CCC), and Frederick Community College (FCC). Please note that you will only be able to obtain lower level credit for this course work. The policy to accept these courses from other schools i.e Thomas Edison Community College changed as of 11/1/07.

If you wanted to go through Frederick Community College , the following website provides information regarding the application and fees: http//training.fema.gov/emiweb/IS/cc.asp. Please note that not all EMI IS courses have been evaluated, and we can only award credit for those which have been evaluated and transcribed by FCC and CCC. There is a comprehensive listing of such courses at the Frederick Community Colleges Web site under the heading eligible courses.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact an academic advisor via telephone, email or message center.
Not the answer I was looking for when I emailed my advisor. Guess I'll plan on CLEP/DSST to fill any "holes" in my plan.

So, as of 11/1/07, the only way to transfer FEMA classes into college credit is to trancript to Frederick or Clackamus?

I put in a call to FEMA EMI to gather a list of colleges that would possibly transfer ISP Courses into Credit.

They told me to go here

The College List

There is quite a list of colleges here, anyone have input on any of them and if they can transfer ISP to college credit?

Are any of the courses considered upper level?

I believe TESC is the only college that approve Upper Level Credit from FEMA ISP Courses

Thomas Edison / FEMA / Credit Banking
Thomas Edison State College / FEMA Independent Study Courses

Credit Banking

I received my credit bank transcript today from TESC. I would like to share one section of my transcript relating to FEMA Independent Study Courses with the forum.

I had FEMA send a copy of my Independent Study Course transcript direct to TESC. I sent no copies of my certificates, not even notarized copies. My FEMA transcript had 46 courses listed and I received credit for 37 courses. All courses were worth one credit, except for IS-009, which was worth 2 two credit hours.

My credit bank fee at the military rate was $250, giving me the credits at $6.58 per credit hour. It would be lower if I figured in the fact that I had other courses that were not FEMA related on the transcript.

Credit (37)
001, 002, 003, 005, 007, 008, 009, 010, 011, 015, 111, 120, 139, 195, 208, 230, 235, 240, 241, 242, 244, 271, 275, 279, 288, 292, 301, 324, 346, 386, 393, 394, 513, 600, 630, 631, 632.

No credit (9)
022, 055, 100, 200, 317, 340, 362, 650, 700.

Have Not Taken (yet)
253, 330, 331, 336, 800.

Credit Level of the 37 Courses
100 level - 19
200 level - 16
300 level - 2
400 level - 0

*** The figures above do not count the two US Fire Administration (FEMA) self-study courses, Q118 & Q318, for which I got one credit each. One was a 300 level course and the other a 400 level course. The two US Fire Administration courses were ACE evaluated for college credit, while the FEMA Independent Study courses were not ACE evaluated.

I plan to call them on Monday and find out which specific courses are approved for College Credit, for both lower and upper level.
