General College Math or Algebra

I'm confused about these two CLEP test offerings. I read the CLEP pamphlet and it stated that College Math was the equivalent of 6 credit hours and Algebra 3. Math is not my strong suit and I've been out of school many years. Thought College Math would be the best choice but now I'm not sure. Any of you math majors out there have any advice for me? I would appreciate it.

College Math is easier than college algebra. The alg. exam is equiv to intermediate agebra where as the algebra covered in college math is intro level.

It is my understanding also that College Math is easier than Algebra and more credits!

Lost all my college credits 90 quarter hours due to university policy, it has been over 20 years. So here I am starting from scratch but determined.

Which school? Excelsior has a pretty accommodating policy on this.

Lost my credits from the University of Tennessee - Knoxville - School of Nursing - no they are adament that I cannot transfer any of those credits after being out of school for over thirty years. The Dean states "no college will take them and we will not send a transcript for their review."

Oh well, on ward and upwards, scheduled for four more tests in the next two weeks, wish me luck.

You are coping with this better than I am.

I can understand that nursing credits won’t transfer easily, if it all.

I can also understand that other older credits may not transfer to a traditional college program.

There seem to be schools, like Excelsior, that do accept old Liberal Arts credits, which to me is one of the main purposes of Excelsior - to make sure that our previous efforts are not wasted.

I don’t understand why you wouldn’t be allowed access to your own transcript. I think I’d have a hard time accepting “no” on that one and would ask my transfer school to request it for me.

Anyway, welcome to the forum. It looks like you have a plan to make up your lost credits quickly.

My speculation: Maybe it's due to their records archiving policy which may only maintains them for 30 years. So UT may not have them any more!

I took CLEP College Math, and was pleasantly surprised that it was not as difficult as I thought it would be. Basically, the only things I used were the Comex book and Cracking the CLEP.

The latter book talks about the College Math test saying that "according to ETS, 'most of the mathematical content [on our tests] is held to topics generally taught prior to the tenth grade.'"
