International needs help
#1
Hi people,

I´m from Europe and would be starting from scratch. CLEP and DANTES exams which provide significant bulk of savings to the cost of any of the Big 3 degrees
are not available anywhere near my area so I will be relying solely on affordable online options ( Straighterline, Saylor..etc ).

Is it still possible to do the degree on the cheap without testing out via CLEP and DANTES? My budget is up to $6000 max!

Thanx Smile

Welcome to the forum

I am in England and no where near a test centre, therfore no CLEP or DSST for me either.
I'm currently 6 classes away from completion so I can answer your question with a resounding YES!

Straighterline has given me the bulk of my credits ... and along with TECEP and Study.com I will finish my BA Psychology at Thomas Edison sometime soon Smile

I know there have been some changes in a few degree requirements lately, but I have no doubt there are solutions which will suit you

You will find tons of information on here and depending on degree, you may spend less than your budget Smile

Hope that makes you feel positive Smile

Hi GMT,

Thanx for the encouraging words! Smile

Been lurking here for the past few days gathering information.

Croatian living in Germany and the nearest place where I could sit the CLEP/DSST exams is Ramstein Air Force Base ( off-limits to civilians )

Thomas Edison would be my first choice, a NJ state university, low cost and the name indeed sounds good ( everybody has heard of Thomas Alva Edison! )

Charter Oak is a close second, also a state run institution, more expensive than TESU but seems to be more flexible with regards to credit distribution.

Exclesior I like the least, private run institution, pricey and ...hate the name. ha!

Plan to start with Straighterline next month...baby steps towards a Business Admin. degree.

Congratulations on almost finishing your degree! How long did it take?

What is your opinion on taking exams via ProctorU? Have read some conflicting reports on that one....

ProctorU's OK. The biggest downside is having to choose a specific time to take the test.
NanoDegree: Intro to Self-Driving Cars (2019)
Coursera: Stanford Machine Learning (2019)
TESU: BA in Comp Sci (2016)
TECEP:Env Ethics (2015); TESU PLA:Software Eng, Computer Arch, C++, Advanced C++, Data Struct (2015); TESU Courses:Capstone, Database Mngmnt Sys, Op Sys, Artificial Intel, Discrete Math, Intro to Portfolio Dev, Intro PLA (2014-16); DSST:Anthro, Pers Fin, Astronomy (2014); CLEP:Intro to Soc (2014); Saylor.org:Intro to Computers (2014); CC: 69 units (1980-88)

Yes, I know Ramstein Smile

Thomas Edison is a great choice in my books; I am very excited at getting my degree there.

Do chat with Saharapost on here, he is in Slovakia. He may have used other methods of credit that I haven't.
Also he did business at Thomas Edison, like you wish to. He sped through his degree at quite a pace!
Mine took a couple of years as life has got in the way a few times.

I love ProctorU, and quite honestly they have enabled me to do something that most in the UK would deem incredible!

Straighterline has been a life saver for me, but like I said, do chat with Saharapost Smile

There seem to be quite a few Excelsior exam centres in Germany if you'd prefer going somewhere for a proctored exam. They have a fairly wide range of UEXCEL credit by exams to apply to a TESU degree.

There are so many options, especially for a BSBA at TESU that you will be fine without CLEP/DSST. I have planned a BSBA for a couple of friends using NO CLEP/DSST exams at all - they both would prefer not having to drive to a testing center at all.

Between ALEKS (at home, non-proctored), Saylor, TECEP's, SL, JumpCourse, study.com, TCC, Sophia (all proctored at home), and UExcel, you can find all the classes you need to get your BSBA. And with the ability to test out of the capstone, the price at TESU just can't be beat. I have a plan for about $3000, but with the ability to change out classes/exams here and there, $4000 is still totally doable.

Let us know if you need help with planning a degree, after you've had some time to research it a little bit.

Thanx to everyone for the help and support!

Ideally I would like to get the degree as quickly as possible, with weekends and time after work dedicated to learning, revision and exams. Dunno if at such a pace finishing 2-3 courses per month is at all a realistic idea?

Starting in about 15 days with English Comp 1 and 2 and will update this forum on my progress. Smile

I definitely need to do some more research and find the degree plan suitable for me, but in the meantime I would like to knock out the basics like English Comp and Algebra which are part of every business degree.

@GMT What made you choose TESU as opposed to UK options like for example Open Uni?

I can think of many reasons to choose the American education system over the British, but the main ones for me were:

* A bachelors degree from a USA regionally accredited university is easier to transport around the world ... Unless you're attending Oxford or Cambridge, a British one will more than likely require $$$'s for evaluation when "importing" it to the USA for a post-grad.

* The cost of a regionally accredited degree in the USA is nominal when "testing out" ... testing out in the UK is impossible, so the cost is high and the time is long.

* I personally LOVE the whole multiple choice aspect of American education ... the British system requires a LOT of painful essay exams - some people like that, I don't.

* My life is spent living between the US and UK, I need an education which crosses borders and oceans without too much delay ... TESU offers that ... the Open University, can't.

Hope that helps :patriot:
