Sophia and SDC Courses Have Been Gutted By UMPI
#11
UMPI may have changed something, but we don't know until someone asks and gets confirmation on the changes. This might be a change they're looking for, to have people do at least 60 credits through them to get a better GPA overall and enough RA credits for other reasons, such as applying to law school. Someone please inquire with them of these changes...

Is there an actual source or rumpr about the 60 credits? I thought that was OP overreacting:

This is what it comes down to sadly.

I am being told if your transfer credits weren't transferred before 4/30 you will have to adhere to the new changes.

This means some people who have completed Sophia+SDC BUS or ACC classes and didn't transfer them in before 4/30 will likely have to re-take the same courses at UMPI now to get the credit.

This is a major blow to a lot of people but Hotdogman1 seems to think I am "overreacting" and trying to spread misinformation. Unlike you Duneranger many of us aren't getting degrees for "fun" we are trying to move forward in our careers. If we had the luxury of "hacking" degrees for fun perhaps we would feel nonchalant like you do!

This is a big deal for anyone in the process of an Accounting degree (all ACC classes now transfer as general electives) or BABA PM/IS.

This change has the potential to add 1-2 additional semesters to completing a degree. For people like me paying out of pocket this is one hell of a blow.

The fact this came without warning is very tragic. Hopefully UMPI will address the changes head on and make some exceptions or change their effective date from 4/30 to a later date and give people in process the chance to transfer what they have already completed.

I e-mailed my advisor and she told me that as of today(5/1) 4/30 was the cut off for any in credits to be accepted and from today forward the new equivalencies will have to be adhered to.

I am getting a BA in Psych and so far this doesn't derail my path and I can still be done with 10 courses as of now. However; I am now wondering will there by more changes because I am not starting UMPI until Summer Session II. I still have Sophia and SDC courses to take. Now I have to do 1 StraightLiner course due to the change.

I almost just want to take what I have now and start 05/12 and do the 10 classes for the BLS. I have sent out a few e-mails and I am waiting on a response to see how I should move forward.

UMPI was my first degree so that "fun" angle doesn't really work on me. I don't think you're trying to spread misinformation, but you are overreacting. You said it only affect 2 courses in your Psych major. My previous post shows that BBAs are still viable. This situation really sucks. However, there are numerous alternative credit sources. They might not be as easy as Sophia since you have to take proctored exams but they are available.

There was a screenshot from an email Courtney Boma, Excutive Director, sent that stated there would be changes to transfer credits, and it was starting May 1st.

I was typing on my tablet and you caught a stray that "fun" comment wasn't meant for you. I fixed it.

I don't think its overreacting at all. The writing is on the wall when it comes to UMPI it seems they are not pleased with the Youtube videos and forums like this showing how easily these degrees are "hackable". So essentially they are going to require people to take more credits in house. I do see the residency requirement changing next. They don't want to be known as a degree mill. Not many people will be able to pay for SDC, Sophia, Saylor and Straightliner to get all the requirements for the BABA. UMPI is betting those individuals will likely just take the classes at UMPI.

The changes have not greatly impacted my path yet but with no official announcement it is safe to say they may not be done removing and changing equivalencies.

2.D GEC changing from Sophia's Visual Communication to the harder Critical Thinking tells me UMPI is intent on making it harder to "hack" their degrees.

You're making a lot of assumptions about UMPI, Swiss Cognac. I agree with the others that you are overreacting. It's giving "the sky is falling" vibes and that isn't helpful for anyone, especially those already stressed by life, school, etc. We have no way of knowing if they're watching YouTube videos or scrolling through forums like this, or even what their next move is.

The degrees are still pretty "hackable" and the tuition is much cheaper - at least for me - than attending my local state school.

Critical Thinking wasn't accepted when I went to UMPI so I took both HUM 103 (no longer available i think) and Critical thinking. I remember the courses being similar in difficulty so your assumption about Visual communication being much easier is probably correct.

BBA PM still seems to be viable Sophia + 2 Saylor courses + Coursera

Business Administration Major
BUS 101: Introduction to Business - Sophia Introduction to Business
BUS 150: Introduction to Financial Accounting - UMPI
BUS 200: Intermediate Business Computing - UMPI
BUS 220: Managerial Accounting - Saylor Managerial Accounting
BUS 244: Management Information Systems - Saylor Management Information Systems
BUS 325: Financial Management - UMPI
BUS 353: Legal & Ethical Environment of Business - UMPI
BUS 440: Business Analytics - Coursera IBM Data Analyst Professional Certificate
BUS 469: Strategic Professional Communication - UMPI
ECO 207: Macro & Micro Economics - Sophia Take both Macoeconomics & Microeconomics
MAT 140: Mathematics for Business - Sophia Calculus (only for business majors)
PCJ 215: Business Communication - Sophia Business Communication

Project Management Concentration
BUS 141: Introduction to Project Management with Microsoft Projects - UMPI
BUS 240: Change Management - UMPI
BUS 343: Project Risk & Cost Management - UMPI
BUS 345: Database Management Systems - Coursera IBM Data Analysis and Visualization Foundation
BUS 400: Project Management Applications - Coursera Google Project Management Professional Certificate
BUS 415: Operations Management - UMPI
BUS 245: Programming for Managers - Coursera Google Data Analytics Certificate
BUS 401: Advanced Project Management Applications II - UMPI

EDIT: 10 Courses at UMPI. GEC still seems viable via Sophia.

GEC changes: I compared the UMPI transfer database for Sophia courses to the GEC wiki.
https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/UM...ts_Roadmap
  • 1C Workplace Communication (BUS 210) is missing
  • 2D Visual communication moved to 2E. Critical thinking is the only course that satisfies 2D
  • 2A Introduction to Psychology was added.
  • 3C Health, Fitness, and Wellness was added.
  • 5A Approaches to Studying Religion was added.
  • (?) 3C Anatomy and Physiology I is missing. You still get 3E with the lab. (Probably fine to take for 3C)
I created a Google sheets by directly copy pasting from the UMPI transfer database on 5/2/2025. I only did this for Sophia courses.
The sheet "General Education Requirement" is formatted like the wiki. It is still possible to complete the GEC via Sophia and an example is provided on sheet "Simplified."
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e...Px/pubhtml

Edit: I forgot to add Intro to College Mathematics is missing as well.

Did you get the e-mail? Because I didn't get it nor did anyone I know get the e-mail. Like I said this was NOT announced to students. If you got the e-mail please share it otherwise fall all the way back.
